County Seeks Input for Home Business Bill

There are currently 355 registered business owners on Molokai and most of them are home based, according to Jennifer Hawkins, small business specialist at the Kuha’o Business Center. These businesses are regulated by the Maui County Council under a bill currently up for revision. But when the council visited Molokai last week, asking for feedback on how to best tailor these standards and encourage small businesses, many Molokai business owners revealed they never knew the ordinance existed.

“I feel very unprepared as do most of us [home-based business owners] here to speak on this,” said local business owner Brenda Kaneshiro before the council Wednesday evening.…

Working Women

New Professional League on Molokai

A motivated group is working together to empower women on Molokai through an emerging professional organization called the Molokai Professional Women’s League (MPWL). The organization’s goal is to host professional networking opportunities, mentorship programs and collective support to encourage active leadership in the community.

“We want to support the women here on Molokai,” said MPWL Vice President Liette Corpus. “If we support our women, we will strengthen our families and our communities.”

More than 40 members, representing all ages, attended MPWL’s first membership meeting last Thursday at Hotel Molokai. There, they were introduced to the organization, its mission and plans for the future.…

Molokai Furniture Celebrates 10 Years

For local business owner Denise Taueetia, growing up on Molokai meant always working hard. After 10 years of managing her own gift and furniture store, she’s taking a moment to celebrate.

“I still look at our pictures from our first anniversary,” said Taueetia. “In the beginning it was fun and it’s still fun today.”

Molokai Furniture got its start in 2003 after Taueetia had come back to the island after studying and working on Maui.

“[My husband and I] had gotten rid of all our furniture on Maui,” said Taueetia. “When I came here, I thought it was going to be easy to get furniture, but it wasn’t.”…

Regulating Home Businesses

County of Maui News Release

The County of Maui is considering amending a bill relating to home businesses. The purpose of the proposed revisions is to establish standards and restrictions for the regulation of home businesses. It also seeks to establish home businesses as a permitted use in the residential and rural zoning districts and as a special use in the agricultural zoning district, as well as classify parcels upon which a home business is conducted as commercialized residential for real property tax purposes.

A public meeting will be held on Molokai on Nov. 20 at the Mitchell Pauole Center at 6 p.m.…

Store With a Mission

The Store House reopened its doors at a new Kaunakakai location last month. Now next to Sundown Deli, the business provides another option for eating and groceries and represents a bright future of good food, friendly faces, and community stewardship.

Kitchen specials include roast pork, chicken enchiladas, and pork chops with mushroom gravy as well as a variety of tropical fruit bowls, salads, sandwiches, coffees, and homemade flavored lemonades and mamaki teas.

“Our lemonade has been flying off the shelves,” said co-owner Nora Espaniola. “We’re not able to squeeze lemons fast enough.”

Espaniola manages the business with three of her sisters—Addie Delos Reyes, Rosie Torres-Batara, and Esther Torres-Umi—each providing a helping hand in the kitchen and contributing to the menu.…

Videoconference Workshops Linked

The Kuha`o Business Center (KBC) on Molokai and the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) at the Maui Mall have successfully been linked via video conferencing. For the first time, Molokai residents and business owners can take advantage of the great workshops produced on Maui without traveling. Conversely, Maui residents will be able to sign up for the Molokai workshops.

“This is a great day for our small businesses and entrepreneurs on Molokai,” Mayor Alan Arakawa said. “This kind of government collaboration is just what we need, and it makes it so much easier for residents to gain the knowledge and skills they need to build their businesses.”…

Small Business Grant Awards Announced

County of Maui News Release

The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) and Lokahi Pacific recently announced that a total of $48,303 in Small Business Revitalization grants has been awarded to businesses in Hana, Molokai, and Lanai. These areas have been identified as the areas in Maui County hardest hit in their ability to recover from the economic downturn of the past few years.

The matching grant program requires the business owner to contribute 40 percent to the project, with the grant covering the remaining 60 percent. The grant awards are intended to provide assistance to businesses for projects they did not have funding for, such as purchasing new equipment, renovating, creating or enhancing websites, purchasing marketing materials and other purposes that will help the businesses grow, prosper and sustain jobs.…
