Our Native American Business Network returns to work with the Kuha`o Business Center and Native entrepreneurs as a part of their thee-year program to provide entrepreneurial training to the community on Molokai. Trainings are made possible by a grant provided by the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) and allows a local organization, Kuha`o Business Center, to partner with the Portland-based, national nonprofit to work with area citizens on business development initiatives three times per year. ONABEN is returning April 8 and 9, providing small business training April 9, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Queen Lili’uokalani Children’s Center.…

Duo Dishes Out Aloha

If you’ve tasted a difference at Paddlers Inn lately, it’s probably thanks to sibling team, Tammy Smith and Kama Hoe, welcomed into the Paddlers family as of September 2013. Working as general managers, they are dedicated to not only improving the total dining experience, but also creating job security and supporting the community while they’re at it.

Before their parents, Herbert and Julia Hoe, left Oahu 20 years ago to start retired life on Molokai, they had instilled the importance of hard work, family and community into their children.

“I’d like to think we taught them well,” said Herbert. “I had this saying—I’ll leave you with no money, but I’ll leave you to be independent and with a good education.”…

Entrepreneurial Empowerment Workshops

A free, two-day workshop will teach business concepts for anyone starting up or running a small business. Held by RedWind and ONABEN hosted by Kuha`o Business Center, this small business development workshop will be provided in Kaunakakai at the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) on Monday, April 7 and the Queen Lili`uokalani Children’s Center (QLCC) at Kulana Oiwi on Tuesday, April 8, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This workshop, one of 15 RedWind will hold this year, will cover business concepts indispensable for anyone starting up or running a small business. Instructors will also identify and help participants avoid common pitfalls.…

Local Girl Receives Honorary Award

A tradition of Molokai entrepreneurship with aloha fostered by the late Annette Pauole-Ahakuelo is being carried on today by many local business people. Wailani Tanaka, owner of Something For Everybody, was recently honored for that spirit by being named the recipient of the special 2014 Annette Pauole-Ahakuelo Molokai Small Business Achievement Award.

Part of this year’s Mayor’s Small Business Awards, Tanaka was given the recognition on Feb. 26 as the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce honored the winners from around Maui County. Tanaka was the only recipient from Molokai, though one of three to receive nominations; others were Suzette Kahana of Kalapaki Girl Designs and Tarrah and Noa John Horner of iCandie and iCopie.…

Renewable Energy Proposal Changes Direction

Ikehu Molokai — the project proposed jointly by Princeton Energy and Molokai Ranch with the goal of lowering the island’s electricity rates and creating a 100 percent renewable energy source – has changed directions since its inception. Steve Taber, the CEO of California-based company Princeton, now says after community concerns, plans do not include the stored hydro energy system above Manila Camp originally proposed.

Taber said now that meetings have been held with Manila Camp residents and other groups around the island, two major concerns arose with the company’s project. The original intention involved installation of nearly 100 acres of solar panels, an approximately 10-acre water reservoir, and a pumping and turbine station located above or near Manila Camp.…

County Funding to Expand Businesses

County of Maui News Release

Maui County businesses looking to expand, strengthen or diversity have an opportunity to apply for funding through the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED). The office is rolling out a program designed to support Maui, Molokai and Lanai businesses.

The Economic Development Revolving Fund (EDRF) was created by the Mayor’s Office and passed by the Maui County Council in late 2011. The fund currently has $1 million which, by ordinance, was designed to strengthen and diversify the County’s economy; to support existing County businesses; to promote job creation; to attract new business, industry, construction, and events that will foster economic development in the County; and to improve the overall economic and social well-being of the County.…

Four from Molokai Among Small Business Nominees

Four Molokai business people have been nominated for the 2014 Mayor’s Small Business Awards. Suzette Kahana of B&S Kahana Corp. dba Kalapaki Girl Dezigns, Tarrah and Noa John Horner of iCandie and iCopie, and Wailani Tanaka, owner of Something for Everybody are joining nearly 30 other Maui County nominees. Awards, put on by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and Maui Chamber of Commerce, will be announced on Wenesday, Feb. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the King Kamehameha Golf Club’s Waikapu Ballroom.

“This is an exceptional group of nominees, and all of them are worthy of an award,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa.…
