Maui Cancer Wellness Retreat News Release

The Maui Cancer Wellness Retreat 2019 will be held Sept. 20-22 at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. In its third year, the three-day weekend retreat will be offered to all newly diagnosed cancer survivors on Maui, Molokai and Lanai to transform their lives to new and better level of health and wellness. Twenty-four scholarships will be available to attendees, including Molokai residents, with funds raised from the Royal High Tea and Garden Tour at Lona Ridge benefitting Maui Cancer Wellness Retreats’ scholarship program. This is the third year that Molokai cancer survivors have been offered scholarships to attend this retreat. In 2017, four Molokai survivors attended and last year, five attended.

Dr. Bridget Bongaard, Director of the Maui Cancer Wellness.and team of expert presenters will provide tools and cutting edge evidence based learning about the healing process. Presenters at this year’s Retreat include Dr. Irminne Van Dyken, a board certified general and trauma surgeon with the American College of Surgeons and is Hawaii’s first board certified physician with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Van Dyken will teach nutrition and how foods interact with the body to heal and grow. Cyndi Levine,PsyD, a clinical psychologist and licensed professional counselor, has extensive experience facilitating cancer survivor retreats, will address body image, relationships, and life through the cancer journey. Richard Hill, PhD, will teach how literature, movies and videos can affect the healing process. There will be other expert presenters in art therapy, yoga, proprioceptive writing, meditation, qi qong, massage therapy and self-care.

“Members of the team and staff were very helpful, concerned and efficient with the well-being of me and others,” said a previous Molokai attendee. “They met the physical, material and spiritual needs of all attendees; in addition, they offered valuable advice to help everyone make wise decisions as survivors. The events and workshops equipped and empowered us with strategies and skills of hope, courage and a positive attitude to persevere.”

The Maui Cancer Wellness Retreats is a nonprofit organization serving Maui County since 2017. Interested applicants from Maui, Molokai, and Lanai, may apply for the 24 scholarships available to newly diagnosed cancer patients and those up to one year out of treatment.
