Hawaiian Electric News Release

Hawaiian Electric is in exploratory discussions with Pūlama Lāna`i about the possible sale of the Lāna`i utility.

Hawaiian Electric was approached by Pūlama Lāna`i about acquiring the assets of the utility after Hawaiian Electric issued a request for proposals (RFP) for renewable energy projects on Lāna`i. The exploratory talks are in the preliminary stages.

Representatives of the privately held company said it was already working to develop a plan that would increase the use of renewable energy and lower electricity bills for the island’s 3,000 residents. It approached the utility as part of its long-term sustainability plans for the island, which is almost entirely owned by entrepreneur Larry Ellison and managed by Pūlama Lāna`i.…

Veterans must have the Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) to present at facilities and bases. The VHIC is the same card veterans use to check in at VA medical clinics for appointments. The VHIC must show one of the three eligibility requirements or veterans will not be allowed access.…

Palaau Generating Unit Trips, Causes Islandwide Outage

Tuesday, January 21st, 2020

Molokai experienced an islandwide power outage lasting several hours and affecting 3,250 customers last week.

The power outage started around 11 a.m. on Jan. 7. Hawaiian Electric Communications Manager Shayna Decker said in an email that the power was restored to the majority of the utility’s customers by 3 p.m.

Another 280 customers in parts of Kualapu‘u, Ho‘olehua and Kalaupapa only had their power restored by 8:40 p.m.

“The initial event occurred when a single generating unit tripped at the Palaau Power Plant. We are looking into other factors that may have led to the system-wide disruption,” she said.

As part of incident’s assessment, Hawaiian Electric is inspecting and testing electrical equipment on the system to address how to mitigate similar issues, according to Decker.…

Visitors Bring Special Connection to Kalaupapa

A group taking a tour at Kalaupapa was treated to a nice surprise last week. Two visitors in the group were relatives of a nun who lived in the Hansen’s disease settlement more than 70 years ago. With help from two resident nuns, the visitors were able to find their ancestor’s picture on a convent’s wall.

“Sometimes, people come to find their ancestors’ grave, and that is very exciting,” Kekaula Tours guide Rick Schonely said. “But this was the first time that we found an ancestor that was a nun who served there and had her picture on the wall at the convent.”…
