Keani Rawlins-Fernandez announced her re-election to the Maui County Council, representing Molokai. She looks forward to campaigning with her supporters after the Primary Election on Aug. 8. Since there are only two candidates for the Molokai seat, the race will only appear on the Nov. 3 General Election ballot this year.

Rawlins-Fernandez currently serves as Council Vice-Chair and Budget Committee Chair, positions she was unanimously elected for in her first term. As the youngest sitting Councilmember, her perspective helps bring innovative solutions, while her energy moves legislation along efficiently.

Nakagawa Hits Fifth Hole in One

On Saturday, July 4 in the monthly Ace for Kukui O Molokai Golf Club, long time and legendary Molokai golfer Ronald “Naka” Nakagawa got his fifth all-time hole in one on the first hole at iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course. His 8-iron shot on the 125 yard Par 3 hole was beautifully hit at the pin and rolled in for an ace. It was his second hole in one of the year! He got his fourth all time ace on Jan. 29 on the same hole. Naka is on fire in 2020 at Ironwoods!

The Hui O Kukui held its July Ace Tournament on the 4th of July at Ironwood Hills GC and Henrietta Holi-Helm is the July Ace winner.…

Molokai Has 11 Monk Seal Pups This Season

Molokai has had the most endangered Hawaiian monk seal births in the state so far this year, as the typical pupping period draws to a close. Out of 18 births so far in the main Hawaiian Islands, 11 were on Molokai, according to a July 1 update from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries. Monk seal pups are normally born in the spring and summer, though they can be born at any time of year, stated the NOAA report.

Last year was a record-breaking pupping season with 48 Hawaiian monk seals born in the main Hawaiian Islands.…

Brushfire Burns 40 Acres

A 40-acre brushfire burned in Ho’olehua on June 28 just east of the Molokai Livestock Cooperative. Firefighters got the alarm around 11:30 a.m. and crews from around the island responded, including a helicopter from Maui.

The fire was under control by 12:35 p.m. but firefighters remained on site to mop up and monitor the area throughout the following night.

Officers from the Molokai Police Dept. contacted several individuals who live in the area to advise them of the situation, but no one was displaced, no structures were impacted and no injuries were reported, according to fire officials.…

COVID-19 Causes Closures, Cancellations

As COVID-19, also called coronavirus, has become a global pandemic and swept across the country in the last few weeks, Molokai has begun to see the direct impacts of precautionary measures from school closures and event cancellations to medical measures. Information is constantly changing and it should be noted that the details provided here are up to date as of press deadline on Sunday, March 15.

Despite widespread rumors last week, there are currently no known cases of COVID-19 on Molokai. Six cases have been confirmed in the state, one of which is a visitor on Maui.…

Molokai Paddlers Compete at States

The Molokai High School Girls Paddling crew traveled to Keehi Lagoon on O‘ahu last Saturday for the HHSAA State Canoe Racing Championships. The Lady Farmers finished 8th in the state (4:42.82) after finishing 4th in Heat 2 of the prelims (4:53.71) and 2nd in semifinal heat 1 (4:42.30).

Head Coach Stefanie Hubbard was happy with her young team and proud of their effort, “It was a fun but tough day for the girls. They paddled hard and fought their way into finals. I’m so very proud of them for pushing their limits and making it that far this year. With such a novice crew, I can’t wait to see what we can do next year.”…

12 Molokai Wrestlers Heading to States

Twelve Molokai High School students – nine girls and three boys – earned the right last weekend to represent the Friendly Isle in the 2020 HHSA Wrestling State Championships on O‘ahu next week.

The Molokai High School Boys and Girls Wrestling teams traveled to Upcountry Maui last Saturday for the MIL Wrestling Championships at Kamehameha High School in Pukalani. After a hard-fought day and night of wrestling, the Farmers qualified 12 students to the state championships at the Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu Feb. 21-22.

Finishing well in this tournament is not just about bragging rights. In order to advance to the state tournament a wrestler must finish in the top-three in their weight class.…

Community Health Center Gets $4M Grant

The Molokai Community Health Center announced last week it was awarded a $4 million grant for the next four years by the Health Resources Services Administration to support primary care services.

“These grant dollars enable MCHC to continue to provide our comprehensive services to residents of Molokai, delivering much-needed care to our patients regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay,” MCHC CEO Helen Wescoatt said in a news release. “We look forward to working with our partners and patients to improve the health of the Molokai community.”

The award’s multi-year project period was granted to MCHC following a 2019 annual on-site review conducted by HRSA, according to a news release by the health center.…

New Police Station Funds Pending Approval

The purchase of the latest site picked by Maui Police Department to relocate Kaunakakai’s Molokai Police Station is only pending approval by the Maui County Council.

“We’re very close to actually moving forward to getting a new police station,” MPD Capt. Gregg Okamoto said in a town hall meeting at Kaunakakai’s Mitchell Pauole Center Jan. 13.

The current police station, more than 40 years old, sits on a floodzone in Kaunakakai. The proposed site for the new police station is an 11.4-acre parcel on Holomua Junction, on the corner of Kalae and Mauna Loa highways.

The original price asked by the landowner was $2.98 million, but MPD was able to negotiate a substantial reduction, and the agreed purchase price is now $1.4 million, according to Okamoto.…

A Teen with a Vision: Project O.C.E.A.N Hawai‘i

Molokai Public Library became the stage last week for a teenager who is causing a major tsunami after creating a project to educate people on the amount of plastic that ends up in the Pacific Ocean, and the necessity to make significant changes about it.

“No matter where you are, you have the power of your voice,” said Dyson Chee, a 17-year-old homeschooled high school senior from O‘ahu. “With that power, comes responsibility.”

Chee created the Project O.C.E.A.N. Hawai‘i after attending an Ocean Heroes Bootcamp when he was only 16 years old. Since then, he has learned more about plastic pollution and how it affects the oceans, and has been a vocal advocate against single-use plastic.…
