She climbed the few steps from the airport’s concrete strip and disappeared into Makani Kai’s plane. The doors closed, the engines roared, and the small plane began to pull away from the terminal building. We watched and waved as it taxied toward the top of the runway, turned, and with an increased roar of the engines, sped down the runway, then lifted gracefully into the Kalaupapa sky. The Rose of Kalaupapa was on her way to her next adventure.

The previous night we had toasted and roasted Sister Rose Annette Ahuna as she prepared to leave us after four years of wonderful ministry here in Kalaupapa.…

“The rate for 15,000 gallons is easily attained within a couple of days for most of Maui County’s multi-unit properties with only one meter,” said Victorino, who chairs the committee.…

Limes can be easily propagated through a technique called air layering. Limes can also help prevent cancer. If you want to look at it another way, your garden is a combination pharmaceutical drugstore and neighborhood produce market, even with just a few plants involved.

Let’s just look at one issue, cancer. Science now tells us, in regard to the ongoing vast study of super foods, that there are all kinds of fruits, veggies and herbs that help the body heal itself and prevent disease. There are three main foods that help prevent cancer — limes, Concord grapes and arugula.…

61st Crossing Paddled by More Ages and Nations

The morning of the 61st crossing of the men’s Molokai Hoe canoe race to Oahu dawned muggy and windless at Molokai’s Hale o Lono Harbor. With calm ocean comes few swells to surf and carry the 99 canoes from around the world across the Ka`iwi Channel, and some feared it might be a slower and more arduous race than usual. But the winning team actually crossed the finish line Sunday in four hours 53 minutes — 17 minutes faster than last year.

Some aspects of this year’s race brought no surprises. That winning team — Shell Va`a from Tahiti — claimed their eighth title in nine years.…

Giving Thanks to County Employees

Wednesday, October 16th, 2013

Maui County honored its Molokai employees at the 21st annual recognition luncheon last week as “a small way to say thank you,” in the words of County’s Managing Director Keith Regan.

“We often hear county government talking about big assets — roads, bridges, [etc.], things worth millions of dollars — but our employees are the biggest assets,” said Regan.  “You can’t put a value on what they’re worth. They do so much in our community.”

The event recognized county employees on Molokai with perfect attendance, employee of the year nominees, service anniversary awards and retirees.

“Because Molokai is my home, I need to say, at times we take our public employees for granted,” said Molokai County Council member Stacy Crivello

County employees are responsible for a variety of tasks that keep the island running smoothly — and many work above and beyond their job description.…
