Molokai Planning Commission Needs New Commissioners

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

The Molokai Planning Commission, a decision-making body comprised of volunteer residents, is left on shaky ground after two commissioners leave the group this month. The five-year terms of Chairperson Miki`ala Pescaia and commissioner Debra Kelly have expired. That leaves the commission with barely enough members to make quorum, and with no candidates under serious consideration, the commission is seeking community volunteers.

“Right now, the authority rests with county council,” said Mike Molina, executive assistant to Mayor Alan Arakawa. The mayor’s office received a letter on March 6 informing them that the two applicants they had recommended, Karen Ashley and Amy Maeda, had been rejected by the council, most likely due to their lack of experience and long-term residency, according to Molina.…

Crime Prevention Tips

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Outside of Takes Variety Store, a sign posted on the window reads: “FREE Ride in a Police Car if you shoplift.” This sign is one of many examples of how small business owners can aid the Maui Police Department in preventing crime, according to the American Crime Prevention Institute.

With limited police resources on the island, the Maui Police Department is calling upon the community for communication and assistance in response to increasing questions concerning recent crimes on Molokai. When it comes to criminal defense, the importance of choosing a reliable and experienced criminal defense lawyer or attorney cannot be overstated.…

Kala`e Tangonan: the business of sharing beauty

Tucked between towering cabinets and buckets of paint-dye in her garage-studio, Molokai artist Kala`e Tangonan is home.  Standing over an old table, she paints milky wax designs over a blank silk scarf – it is the humble beginnings of what will become a color-drenched masterpiece.  The tip of her brush dips into hot wax and then glides freely over the gauzy material, hardening into the free-hand patterns that will appear after the dying process.  She peels the scarf from the table and dunks it into a bucket of violet dye – a technique called batik. …

Detective Eugene Santiago retires after 30 years of service

After 30 years of service with the Maui Police Department — 28 of which were served here in Molokai –Sergeant Detective Eugene Santiago is retiring. Since his promotion to Sergeant in February of 1998, one of Santiago’s highest priorities has been his commitment to the community.

“Detective Santiago is one of the most genuinely nice people I know,” said Lieutenant Clyde Holokai.  “He is one guy I’ve never seen let the job get to him in a negative way.”

Not only did Santiago win the respect of his peers in the department, but also earned recognition for his service on a broader level.…

Food for Thought

If you love food, then you’ve probably already gathered it’s not just about knowing where to find good food –it’s also understanding where good food comes from. This year, the Maui County Agricultural Festival is paring together 12 chef-and-farmer teams to not only prepare mouthwatering dishes, but to also educate the community with a holistic understanding of local agriculture. Molokai homesteaders Lynn and Russell DeCoite of L&R Farm will represent the Friendly Isle at the upcoming festival’s Grand Taste Education this year.

The DeCoites were selected to participate in the event by Humuhumunukunukuapua`a restaurant Chef Isaac Bancaco of the Grand Wailea, who orders sweet potatoes for his menu directly from L & R Farm.…

Passing on Prince Kuhio’s Legacy

Families gathered at Lanikeha Recreation Center to celebrate what would have been Prince Kuhio’s 141st birthday on Saturday, March 24. His actual birthday, March 26, is recognized as a national holiday and celebrated every year across the islands. Guests young and old enjoyed a variety of vendor booths, food selections and live music performances in his honor.

Life might be different for present-day Hawaiian homesteaders if Prince Kuhio had not lobbied for the Hawaiian Homes Act, which was first passed in 1921. As the first royal-born representative for Congress, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole fought to ensure the preservation of 200,000 acres of land for native Hawaiians.…

TV and Your Child

Column by Tutu and Me Traveling Preschool

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 2 should not watch any TV or videos. Children at this age need to be interacting with people and materials, rather than sitting passively watching TV. Children over 2 should also be engaged in play activities with adults and other children, but may watch a limited amount of TV. Choose educational programs for your child, such as “Sesame Street” or “Dora the Explorer,” and age-appropriate videos.

Children who watch too much TV tend to do worse in school, be more overweight, and learn behaviors from television.…

Aloha my fellow veterans and residents of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news and upcoming events.

Sitting down to share a meal with Afghans, you may find yourself dining on a sheep’s fatty rump. Here’s why the meat of “fat-tailed sheep,” as they are aptly named, is considered a delicacy in the country. The sheep got their name because they can store a great amount of fat in their rears. It’s a necessary trait for the sheep, which are found in arid regions throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia, according to the website sheep101.info.…
