Honolulu 5K Tryout Results

The first tryout race for Kualapu`u School’s 5K Running Team was held on Saturday, March 31 on the Coffees of Hawaii plantation course. A special thank you goes out to the following volunteers who helped make this event happen: Kiku Donnelly, Katina Soares, Ian Haskins, Joyce Haase, Nohea Deponte, and Jesse Ford.

The second and final tryout for the 5K team that will compete on Oahu will be held on Saturday, April 14. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Coffees. Adult registration fee is $10. Youth race for free. Start time is 8 a.m.

Disability Fair 2012

HCIL News Release

Hawaii Centers for Independent Living (HCIL) will host the second annual Disability Fair at Kulana `Oiwi Complex on Wednesday, April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kaunakakai HCIL hosts this event to bring awareness to services and resources available for persons with permanent disabilities. The theme will be “Walk in my shoes and see the world through my eyes.”

Legendary Hawaiian comedian Frank DeLima will MC this year’s event. It is anticipated to be much larger than last year’s event with over 30 vendors, crafters, as well as hourly presentations at the QLCC conference room.

HCIL is a non-profit agency dedicated to ensuring the rights of people with disabilities to live fully integrated in the community with equal opportunities and choices for life.…

Molokai Scooters Opens Shop

With gas prices on the rise, Molokai Scooters may be just what residents and visitors to the island need. Oregon natives David and Jane Kelly are opening the moped rental store next door to the Bank of Hawaii in Kaunakakai, with an expected start date of April 9.

With years of experience in the retail business shared between the two, the Kellys are hopeful for the future of Molokai Scooters even before its official opening. They currently have a fleet of 20 mopeds available for rent with a 50cc engine –an engine small enough to operate with only a driver’s license under Hawaii law.…

The Rakefish Makes a Splash

Kaunakakai Elementary sixth graders learn about ocean pollution.

What fish is 4 feet long, has a rectangular body, can travel on land, and has helped bring awareness to ocean pollution across the nation? Answer: the Rakefish.

The Rakefish is not a real fish but a large fish-shaped sculpture with a broken rake as a fin. The “fish” has journeyed from A.W. Cox Elementary School in Guildford, Connecticut to teach Kimberly Ka`ai’s sixth grade class at Kaunakakai Elementary school about ocean pollution. Kaunakakai Elementary will be the sculpture’s only stop in Hawaii before continuing to its next destination in Washington, D.C.

Molokai parent Suzette Onofrio, whose niece attends the elementary in Connecticut, acted as a liaison in the process of bringing the Rakefish Project to Hawaii.…

Bargaining for Bucks

With projected Maui County funds even lower than last year, Molokai residents, from middle schoolers to kupuna, made their voices heard in asking for their share. They provided testimony before Maui County’s Budget and Finance Committee members last week in support of local organizations and programs such as Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO), the Molokai Humane Society (MoHS), the Molokai Community Service Council (MCSC) and Kuha`o Business Center.

The Committee is holding district meetings throughout the county to receive testimony on the Fiscal Year 2013 Budget that Mayor Alan Arakawa submitted to the Council at the end of March. They have until June 10 to pass revisions, and the final budget will take effect on July 1, according to Vice-Chair Joseph Pontanilla.…

John Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). Keawe will offer a tribute to the slack key style and include selections from the music of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and others, in addition to presenting his original compositions, at the Molokai Public Library on April 11 at 3 p.m.…

Students at Kilohana School are learning some high-tech agriculture during a 21st Century grant horticulture class. Using a technique called aeroponics, students will grow fruits and vegetables without the use of soil.

Using an Aeroponics Grow Kit, students will have the opportunity to learn this aero hydroponic gardening technique. Increasing the aeration of your nutrient solution, by using sprayers, foggers, nebulizers or other devices, more oxygen is delivered to plant roots, stimulating growth and preventing algae formation. Plants form oxygen from carbon dioxide only on the green parts of themselves, so enhancing the dissolved oxygen at the root zone enhances the metabolism and growth of plants.…

The Hunt is On!

Easter celebrations kick off with Hawaii’s biggest Easter egg hunt.

Molokai keiki participated in fun games, learned the story of Easter, and hunted for eggs at Hawaii’s biggest Easter Egg hunt, hosted by King’s Cathedral at Kaunakakai Ball Field on Saturday.  It was a free event for young and old, with thousands of prize filled eggs for the finding.

Write Out Loud, a group of Molokai High School writers, has been meeting on Friday mornings to draft, revise and share their writing since November, 2011. This April, they are trying out a new genre: screenwriting. Write Out Loud will join the international movement of Script Frenzy that occurs each April and is made possible by the organizers of National Novel Writing Month in November.

Students have been preparing themselves by reading actual screenplays that were made into movies, such as “Benny and June.” They have been introduced to the infamous three act structure and the concept of the sought-after McGuffin.…

Bills Supporting Irrigation System Move Forward

Rep. Mele Carroll News Release 

The Molokai Irrigation System (MIS), currently facing drought conditions, has help on the way from Representative Mele Carroll. Last Friday at the Hawaii State Capitol, the House Committee on Agriculture held a hearing on two measures that would address the short-term and long-term concerns regarding the MIS.

Both House Concurrent Resolutions (HCR) 207 and 208, introduced by Rep. Carroll who currently represents the island of Molokai, were unanimously passed unamended in the House Committee of Agriculture.

The first House Concurrent Resolution 207 requests that the Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture convene a task force to develop long range goals and plans for the MIS.…
