Stand Up Paddle Race #3

Stand Up paddle Association of Molokai (SUPAM) had race number three of the season on the long course, a distance of 10.3 miles. The wind held a steady 20 knots at the beginning, which then dropped to 10-15 knots in the last few miles. The short course participants from prior events switched to the long course making this quite a fun event.
Josie and Alex Mawae took to the outside of the reef, and Alex battled it out with Kekai Adachi who took to the inside. David Lichtenstein cruised to the finish line in first place with a credible time 2.15.52 and Kekai and Alex tied for second in 2.17.38.…

Let me explain why an old guy from Molokai is flying to Oahu and helping to lead a charge for labeling. Molokai is paying the true cost for this “cheap” genetically modified organism – or GMO – food. Our best farm lands are being turned into dust bowls. Soil is not only blowing out into the sea but is being washed by rain down onto our reefs. In the dust are powerful chemicals which are blowing into our cars, schools, kupuna housing, daycare center, County Baseball Park, Molokai Community College, and hundreds of homes. If this is happening to our island, it must be happening on other islands, we all have na`au to aloha aina, and kuleana, to malama aina.…

Adults on Molokai currently have the highest rate of smoking, binge drinking and obesity when compared to others in Maui County, according to the latest Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) –the largest continuously conducted telephone health survey in the world. For many residents, those habits can mean shorter lifespans, restricted activity and less fulfilling lives. But there are many programs on the island that can assist those looking to make a change and help improve those statistics.

Last week, the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) hosted a town hall meeting at Kulana `Oiwi Halau to discuss ways to reduce tobacco use, eat healthier, stay physically active and manage or prevent chronic diseases.…

Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages, The Berry Company, Hawaii Food Banks and Local Schools, Work to Collect Directories for Recycling

Students around the state are competing in an annual event to recycle the most telephone directories with the goal of surpassing last year’s recycling totals and winning cash prizes. The Think Yellow, Go Green program is put on by Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages in conjunction with its sales agent, The Berry Company, LLC. The companies team up with schools on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai for the program, set to run April 25 through May 25.…

While time often seems to stand still here on Molokai, new technologies are becoming more and more prevalent in everyday life. One major force among these new technologies is Twitter, an online social networking service that enables users to network with other users via 140-character posts known as “tweets.” If you want to add graphics to your marketing and social media content, you may click here.

Representatives from Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) visited Molokai last week and successfully held Molokai’s very first “tweet-up” at Kamoi Snack-and-Go. A tweet-up involves Twitter users gathering at a designated place, logging onto their accounts (usually using their cell phones), and “tweeting” what they’re doing and who they’re doing it with.…

Add your input to a new state ocean resources management plan during a listening session on Molokai, to be held May 30, at the Mitchell Pauole Center. An open house will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a formal presentation at 6:30.

The State of Hawaii Office of Planning Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program is inviting coastal and ocean users, as well as other stakeholders and interested individuals, to the state-wide series of listening sessions as it begins the Hawaii Ocean Resources Management Plan (ORMP) update.

The ORMP takes a place-based approach to management of ocean resources in the islands, taking into account recognition of the ecological connections between land and sea, the link between human activities and impacts on the environment, and the need for improved collaboration and stewardship in natural resources governance.…

Lanai Solar Farm Generating 1.5 MW

La Ola, the largest solar farm in the state, is now producing at its full capacity of 1.5 megawatts (MW) DC (or 1.2 MW AC) of clean solar energy on Lanai. The renewable energy generated by La Ola will help to stabilize electric rates on Lanai and reduce Lanai’s importation and burning of foreign oil.

La Ola is the world’s first utility-grade photovoltaic (PV) project to incorporate battery storage. The 1.5 MW solar farm located on the Island of Lanai, is capable of supplying up to 30 percent of day-time peak electrical demand on Lanai, and 10 percent of the island’s total power needs.…

Kualapu`u School Receives $2.75M for Improvements

Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced the release of $34.5 million in Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) for education, health services and communications projects statewide. As part of those funds, Kualapu`u School will receive $2,750,000 for construction of a new water line.

Rep. Mele Carroll and Sen. J. Kalani English who represent East Maui, the islands of Lanai, Molokai, Kaho`olawe and Molokini worked together with their colleagues and appropriated $2,750,000 in the budget.

“Kualapu`u Elementary School has needed to improve its infrastructure,” said Rep. Carroll. “The $2,750,000 would cover design and construction for a new water line and/or provisions for fire suppression; ground and site improvements and equipment are a major step in our continued school maintenance initiatives.”…
