The Lingle Factor

The Molokai Dispatch Point of View

Currently sitting in her second term as Governor, former Molokai resident, Linda Lingle has been lacking when it comes to consistency in her statements concerning land use issues. However, despite conflicting statements, one statement has been clear: her support of the development of La’au Point.

When she visited the Island in August of last year, Lingle had attested that the, “Molokai Properties Limited (MPL) Community Based Master Land Use Plan is not about La`au, but about the survival of Molokai as an economically viable island.”

Community Seeks to Buy Out Molokai Ranch

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

For decades, residents of Molokai have fought to stop resort development on their rural island. Now the community is launching what they believe will be a final solution:  a campaign to purchase Molokai Properties Ltd. (known locally as “Molokai Ranch”) and create a community-based company to own and manage these lands.  The campaign plans to raise $200 million, starting with the community itself.

Island residents first decided to purchase Molokai Ranch lands in 1998, when the idea emerged as the top goal in a strategic plan that won the island federal recognition as one of 20 Enterprise Communities (EC) in the nation.  Hundreds of individuals and businesses across the island participated in identifying and approving the projects that created the original “EC” plan.  Bringing ownership of the island home to its residents was seen as the only way to guarantee that all of the projects could be completed.

Molokai amateur surfers rip it up at state championships

The young prodigy Taoa Pou, also of Molokai, competed in the menehune division and won a brand new surfboard for being the most inspirational surfer of the event. It was Taoa’s first time surfing Ala Moana and his first time ever competing off-island.

All Molokai competitors received a wild-card entry in the contest, but the grommies proved themselves by displaying their skills and finishing as high as some of the top surfers in the event.

Waves were on offer throughout the early rounds, reaching over four feet on the Hawaiian scale. During the final day the waves dropped to 1-2 feet.

This year’s championship had more than 200 entries from all over the state. It was the first time in its 45 year history that the competition offered cash prizes, which fueled competitiveness between the amateur surfers.

The grommies were throwing down buckets on each turn, playing hide-and-seek in hollow waves and flying low over sections. “The level of surfing was just incredible,” Shima said.

The top three contestants in each division automatically qualify for the Surfing America U.S. Championships at Huntington Beach, CA, in October.

What Do You Know About The Plan?

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Saving the birthplace of hula in Ka`ana, protecting the makahiki grounds in Naiwa, and keeping the `iwi from being disturbed in Keonelele have been Molokai Ranch’s argument for supporting their Master Plan.

The argument is that the development of La`au would act as sacrificial protection to some of Molokai’s most culturally sensitive areas.

The fact is, however, that these lands are already protected from desecration through county law. The Maui County General Plan makes to “identify and maintain an inventory of significant and unique cultural resources for special protection.”

Naiwa, Ka`ana, Keonelele and other culturally significant places are recognized in the Molokai Community Plan which was enacted in December of 2001.
