The Hawaiian value ho`omaika`i, is to have a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness. Gratitude is a learned behavior, and we can teach keiki about ho`omaika`i by our good examples and the examples of others around them. Developing an attitude of gratitude can take patience and practice. Help keiki to notice the many things around us that we can be thankful for: family and friends, a healthy body, a place to live, food for our table, the beautiful sky and ocean, and so much more. Talk about thankfulness and why it’s important. Children who learn gratitude become more sensitive to the feelings of others and develop empathy and other life skills as they grow.…

Tutu’s Memories: Waikiki as I knew it

“Bruce, please point out Paoakalani Ave. where I grew up,” I asked my son as we drove along Kalakaua Ave. in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

“It’s further on,” he replied.

The colorful sights along Kalakaua fascinates me.   There are tourists, surfers, beachgoers, hawkers, panhandlers, and towering hotels, restaurants, elegant shops and convenience stores.

Shortly past Kuhio Beach Bruce points, “There’s Paoakalani.” I strain to see. It’s between two big hotels.

Waikiki had changed from the time I grew up there in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. In the ‘20s there were only three hotels — Moana, Royal Hawaiian and Halekulani.…

Touchdown at Kalaupapa

On a lovely October morning, a plane glided to a perfect touchdown on Runway 5 and I remarked to Sister Theresa, “That has got to be Brittany.” Sure enough, it was Super Girl Brittany who soon pulled up to Terminal 1. Shortly thereafter she was joined by her husband, Captain Sean, Maui John, and Quick Nick, all ace pilots in their nine-seater Makani Kai planes. Their passengers, led by Bishop Larry Silva (Power to the Portuguese) were soon on terra firma eager to begin their pilgrimage to Kalaupapa and Kalawao.

After an initial greeting and prayer by Bishop Larry, Pat Boland, our long time pilgrimage guide from Saint Ann’s in Kaneohe, escorted the entire group of 35 to the waiting Damien Tours’ bus and set out for the township of Kalaupapa.…

Veterans Elect Officers

The annual membership meeting of the Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) organization was held on Friday, Nov. 6. The meeting was called to order by Commander Sam Makaiwi at 10 a.m., and there were 32 members in attendance.

John Condello, veterans counselor will be at the Vets Center with attorneys on Friday, Nov. 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and that afternoon they will be at the OHA office from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Watch commanders are still needed for Tuesday and Wednesday, secretary Allen Diorec informed everyone that we now have 98 lifetime and four annual paid members, total 102.…

Jordan Boswell, a senior at Molokai High School, comes from a third generation homestead farming family from Ho`olehua. His parents are Ui and Aaron Boswell, of Ho`olehua.

As a student in Ms. Harada’s senior class, he chose a career where money was the motivating factor. He decided on becoming an orthopedic surgeon, and he had begun his journey! As Jordan began his research on the education required and the cost for that education, he knew this was no longer about the money, rather it was about serving others.

“As a child growing up I always gave service, through my scouting activities and through church service projects,” he reflected.…

The show will feature high-fired utilitarian stoneware and porcelain ware — items made for home and garden use. You are invited to come and see a wide array of unique, quality ceramics found nowhere else in Hawaii, right here on Molokai.

Dan Bennett has been creating unique hand crafted work on Molokai since 1974. He is a past mathematics teacher at Molokai High School and University of Hawaii, Maui College (UHMC) Molokai, and currently teaches ceramics at the Molokai Arts Center for adults, and classes for credit through UHMC.…

Services for Those with Disabilities

On Nov. 12, the Molokai Community Children’s Council (CCC) put on a workshop regarding data keeping and the importance of data keeping for individuals with disabilities. The speakers were Verna Waikiki for Hawaii Disability Rights Center and Yolanda Tanielu, Parent Co-Chair of Molokai CCC. Yolanda has received state wide recognition for her program of data keeping based on her child with exceptions needs and spoke at the State Planning Proposal meeting several years ago.

Dawn Mains, principal of Molokai Middle School, was critical to the success of this Department of Education (DOE) driven presentation exemplifying the role of DOE and community agencies bonding together to better serve students and their families.…

`Aha Moku Advisory Seeks Feedback

The `Aha Moku Advisory Committee (AMAC) has scheduled a series of public meetings this month to seek comment from communities in `ahupua`a districts as it develops and adopts rules for its operation and administration.

Created by the Legislature in 2012 via Act 288, the `Aha Moku Advisory Committee is attached to the State Dept. of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and is mandated to bring the voices of the `ahupua`a communities forward to the Department on issues related to natural and cultural resources.

“AMAC may advise the DLNR on issues related to land and natural resources management through the ‘Aha Moku system of best management practices,” said Leimana DaMate, AMAC executive director.…

Aloha all my fellow veterans and residents of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news and upcoming events. Now it is time for the conclusion of the story that I started two weeks ago about the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. This is part of what JFK said to the American people in his speech on national TV that Monday night, Oct. 22, 1962. “The 1930s taught us a clear lesson: aggressive conduct, if allowed to grow unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war… our policy has been one of patience and restraint… but now further action is required — and it is underway, and these actions may only be the beginning.…

Flu Season Is Here

The flu can hit senior citizens fast and furious! That’s because their immune systems weaken with age. If you’re over 65—or care for someone who is—keep the following in mind as we head into the flu season.

As for the rest of you? We have a message or two for you, as well.

A better match. Last year, seniors really bore the brunt of the flu season. Sixty percent of flu-related hospitalizations and nearly 80 percent of deaths were among those 65 or older. One problem was that last year’s main strain of flu (H3N2) wasn’t included in the vaccine.…
