Lady Farmers 2-0 After Home Wins

 

The Lady Farmers Girls Volleyball team opened their 2018 season with two wins over the Lanai Pine Lasses last weekend. Molokai won in three straight sets on both days. Friday’s score was 25-14, 25-8 and 25-18. Saturday was another three-set sweep 25-12, 25-11, 25-10.

Head Coach Mahea Rawlins knows its early in the season but was happy to get the wins.

“I’d say each game is a learning experience and we came out ready to play our opening season game,” she said. “Everyone got to play so that’s a plus and the girls did great. We have a lot of room for improvements to prepare us for our upcoming games.…

Pine Lads Football Beat Farmers for 1st Time

 

The Molokai High School 8-Man Football team had won 15 straight MIL league games and the last three MIL championships going into last Saturday’s game against Lanai at Lanai City. The Pine Lads stopped that streak with a 44-16 win over the Farmers, showing that they will be competitive this year again. Lanai was in the championship game against Molokai last year and this was the first time they have beat Molokai’s football team.

Molokai Head Coach Mike Kahale knew it would be a competitive game.

“We knew going in that Lanai would be a tough match up,” he said.…

Tapping Into Tradition

The rhythm of tapping, like a heartbeat, filled Kulana ‘Oiwi Halau last Tuesday night. It was the sound of a traditional tattoo, or uhi, coming to life — in what might have been the first time on Molokai in more than a century.

Residents gathered around in the dim evening light to watch as cultural practitioner Keli’i Makua brought forth a new uhi before their eyes. Makua studied under renowned Hawaiian tatau artist Keone Nunes, who revived the practice in Hawaii as it was on the verge of extinction. In 2016, Makua went through a historic ceremony in which he became a Kahuna Ka Uhi, or priest of tattooing — the first to receive this honor in Hawaii in more than 200 years.…

Taking Aim at Molokai Archery Tournament

 

Molokai Bowhunters Archery Club hit its mark last Saturday as members hosted their 20th annual state tournament at the Kalae Bow Range. The event attracts more than 50 shooters from around the state and mainland each year.

The range consists of more than 10 acres of wooded, hilly terrain, with trails leading to marked targets of varying distances. Shooters compete in a variety of categories based on their bow type, such as freestyle, traditional or bowhunter. It’s an activity for all ages — one of the day’s youngest shooters was 4 years old, while the master seniors category featured archers age 70 and up.…

Football Opens Season with Win

The Molokai Eight-Man football team traveled to Hawaii Island last weekend and got a hard fought 14-8 win over the Pahoa Daggers. The Farmers (1-0) held the Daggers (0-1) to just one TD under the lights at Keeau High School field.

Head Coach Mike Kahale was pleased with his teams play.

“It was a hard fought defensive battle and when Pahoa scored first we needed to keep our composure and stick to the game plan,” he said. “We made some adjustments at half time, but more than anything we just needed the boys to settle in, play their assignments and execute.”…

Primary Election Results

Molokai voters joined residents around the state last Saturday in casting their ballot in the Primary Election. Some also voted early through walk-in voting or mailed ballots. Results largely favored incumbents, or those currently holding the seat.

Statewide, incumbent governor David Ige won the Democratic race with 50.2 percent of the votes over challenger Colleen Hanabusa with 43.4 percent. Ige will be facing Republican Primary winner Andrea Tupola, who received 53.0 percent of her party’s vote, in the General Election. Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Josh Green earned a spot on the November ballot with 30.2 percent of his party’s votes.…

MHS Athletic Director Receives Certification

 

The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) announced that Lee DeRouin, Athletic Director at Molokai High School, has been recognized as a Certified Athletic Administrator.

To earn this distinction, DeRouin demonstrated the highest level of knowledge and expertise in the field of interscholastic athletic administration. The voluntary certification process included a thorough evaluation of the candidate’s educational background, experience and professional contributions, as well as a rigorous, comprehensive written examination. DeRouin is now one of an elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide to attain this level of professionalism.

The NIAAA is a national professional organization consisting of all 50 state athletic administrator associations and more than 10,000 individual members. …

Two More Monk Seals Dead

The deaths of two young male Hawaiian monk seals on Molokai in June are being investigated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This comes after a young female was killed at Mo’omomi in May, with injuries showing human-inflicted trauma as the cause of her death. 

An unidentified juvenile male was found dead at  Paka’a beach on Molokai’s west end on June 25. The other young male, identified as RJ26, was born at Kalaupapa last year and found dead on June 18 on the east end near mile marker 22. NOAA’s Jolene Lau said no other details could be released at this time, pending the investigation.…

Molokai Getting WiFi Hotspots

Kalaupapa settlement now has 10 free public WiFi hotspots, with locations also coming to Kaunakakai, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) has announced. The hotspots will provide one hours of free service per day per device, provided by Spectrum. The Molokai hotspots are among at least 1,000 hotspots that were required as part of the agreement of transfer of Oceanic Time Warner Cable to Charter Communications, known as Spectrum.

The Kalaupapa WiFi hotspots are part of the first wave of public hotspots now active or underway on Molokai, Maui, Kauai and Oahu. Kaunakakai’s hotspots are scheduled for installation this fall, according to the DCCA, though they did not say where they will be located or how many are planned.…

Lanikeha Re-Opens with a Facelift

 

With a mission to help homestead farmers reach their full potential, Lanikeha Community Center in Ho’olehua has reopened its doors with renovations that represent a dream.

“We began this dream a few years ago, we stayed on that mission… and what people said was a mission impossible, is mission accomplished,” said Rosie Davis, legal authorized representative of the Molokai Homestead Farmers Alliance (MHFA). “Our journey continues and it’s just getting better. We’re so proud of where we were… and where we’re going. [This facility] strengthens the community, it strengthens our homesteaders.”

The $1.7 million renovation project by the MHFA, which manages the facility, was paid for by state Grant in Aid funds.…
