Girls Swim Relay at States

The Molokai High School Girls 200 yard medley relay team competed at the state Swimming and Diving Championships last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9–10 on Maui, where they finished fourth in their heat. The Lady Farmers swimmers were senior Michelle McGuire, junior Maire Kalawe, sophomore Kapili Naehu-Ramos and sophomore Kayla DeRouin.

Head Coach Amanda Labriola was excited to have Molokai represented at the swimming state championships.

“I am so proud of our girls who placed fourth in their heat and their time was 2 minutes 10 seconds,” she said. “This season went very well I am proud of the team I had this year.…

Boys Basketball Finishes Season

Last week, the Boys Basketball team played in the Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament, where they won their first game then ended their season in the semifinals game with a 7-5 record.

Molokai played against Haleakala Waldorf, winning 54-30 with 27 points from Senior Kaina Adolpho.

“I was proud of our team for coming together and really playing for each other and they were focused and took care of business so that we were able to advance,” said Head Coach Nohea Pangkee.

The Farmers then advanced to the semifinals and faced the host Lanai Pine Lads (10-3). The Farmers played well in a close game but came up short and lost 43-37.…

Large-Scale Solar Moves Forward

 

A large-scale solar and battery storage project on Molokai has moved one step closer to reality after an agreement was reached between Maui Electric and Molokai New Energy Partners, a division of Chicago-based renewable energy company Half Moon Ventures. The 2.7-megawatt project would supply 41 percent of the island’s electricity usage. It consists of 37 acres of solar panels on industrial land near Maui Electric’s Pala`au Power Plant and a three megawatt battery energy storage system. If all goes as planned, the project is anticipated to in service by the end of 2019, and would operate under a 22-year contract.…

County Offices to Relocate After Rain Damage

Heavy rains on Feb. 5 brought a temporary closure of some county offices in the Mitchell Pauole Center, and this week they will be relocating while repairs are made. Water leaks in the roof necessitated staff to be sent home for the rest of the day on Feb. 5, but the offices reopened the next day, according to county officials, until the relocation is scheduled to begin.

The main Mitchell Pauole hall remains open and unaffected, as well as the Department of Motor Vehicles and Licensing, Council Services and Dept. of Parks and Recreation. However, the offices of Real Property Assessment/Collections, Planning, Water, and Development Services Administration will be closed from Feb.…

One of Stephanie Crabbe’s greatest joys is playing a pivotal role in helping people regain their hearing. “It is life-changing when someone can suddenly hear,” says Stephanie, owner of Audibel Hearing Center, which will be offering visits on Molokai this week.

Stephanie has witnessed amazing transformations — for example: first-time patients who are sad and withdrawn are suddenly elated from recovering the precious sense of hearing. She enjoys seeing how those individuals quickly become more active members of the community, regain lost relationships and just enjoy life more.

Students Work to Reduce Energy Usage

Last month, a group of Molokai Middle School students were trained by Maui Electric staff on the Smart Power for Schools Program. This exciting new program, started by Maui Electric in 2015, allows students to view energy usage in real time at Molokai Middle School and other public schools across the state. Students can look at the peak times that their school uses energy during the day and compare the energy usage with other schools. Using the Power Scope Meter, they are able to determine when power spikes occur to develop energy conservation practices.

The Molokai Middle School students who received this training are Divine Brown, Barbara Simon, Leah Lavoie-Vega, Kathleen Alvarez, Thalia Meyer, Reina Kahue-Cabanting, Owen Svetin, and Isaiah Hanchett-Lopez.…

Sust `aina ble Molokai invites the Molokai community to join the Tentou Network for a day of transformative discussion on Molokai’s readiness for community ownership of renewable energy projects  on Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kulana `Oiwi Halau.

The Tentou network consists of nonprofit organizations from four continents and the Pacific Islands, working in close cooperation with our communities. Girls Paddling 8th in State

The Girls Canoe Paddling team battled on the water all day at Hilo Bay last Saturday in the state Canoe Paddling Championships. The Lady Farmers made it through preliminaries, then semi-finals, to make it to the finals race. The finished eighth in the state with a time of 4:39.88.

Head Coach Stefani Hubbard was proud of her crew for advancing to the state final.

“The girls put up a tough fight last Saturday kicking and scratching their way to make it to finals,” she said. “Though they fell short of our goal, the fact that they tried their best and left everything they had out on that water, they are still able to walk away feeling accomplished.”…

Girls Basketball Closes Season

The Lady Farmers fell short in the semi-finals of the Maui Interscholastic League Division II Girls Basketball tournament two weeks ago on Maui. They lost to the Lanai Pine Lasses (4-6) 49-36 and finished the season at 2-7. It was the fifth meeting of the season between the two teams. Junior Kaitlin DeRouin led Molokai with 20 points. Lanai ultimately fell to champion Seabury (8-1) Friday night 49-41. The Trojans are the lone representative to this year state tournament from the MIL DII league.

Head Coach Shane Mokiao said his girls gave it their all in the semifinal game.

“It was a great game but unfortunately we came out short,” he said.…

Practice Ocean Safety

This winter has brought “unprecedented” ocean fatalities on Maui, according to the Maui Fire Department. Though there have been no close calls reported on Molokai so far this season, officials are warning those entering the water to use caution, as winter swells bring strong current and high surf.

“In the last few weeks, Maui has experienced an unprecedented spike in ocean drowning incidents,” said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto. The month of January brought what he called an unfortunate “string of fatal drownings,” with the latest Feb. 3 drowning of a visitor from Alaska off Wailea marking the 10th ocean related death in Maui County in 2018, he said.…
