Strong Results for Wrestling

The Molokai Boys and Girls Wrestling team showed outstanding results at last week’s round robin tournament at Baldwin High School. The Farmers dominated many weight divisions with multiple top finishes.

Head Coach Randy Manley said his teams are getting better as they get closer to the MIL and State Championships.

“Yesterday was a good day for MHS wrestling,” he said. “We saw a number of improvements on both the girls’ and boys’ teams. There were stand out performances by Luhi Pedro, who defeated her Baldwin rival who has previously beaten her in two previous outings. Although defeated 8-5 by Lahainaluna’s Nalu Estrella, Caele Manley continued to move forward in performance.…

Lady Farmers Hand Seabury 1st Loss

The Lady Farmers Basketball team got a well-earned split with the Seabury Hall Spartans last  weekend at The Barn. Both teams fought hard and put on an entertaining show in their two games. On Friday, the Spartans had a 25-24 lead at the half but pulled away in a close game to win 41-36 and improve their record to 7-0. The Lady Farmers were led by Sydney Rawlins with 13 points, while Kaitlin DeRouin added 11, Camille Ledesma had seven, and Tai-Li Tangatailoa had six.

On Saturday, Seabury again had a one point lead at the half, 15-14, but Molokai (2-4) had a good second half and won a close game 34-31 and handed the Spartans, now 7-1, their only loss of the regular season.…

Ferry System Not Feasible

A state ferry system is not feasible, and neither is bringing back the Molokai to Maui ferry, even though it may be needed, according to a recent study from the Department of Transportation.

After being tasked with conducting the study by the state Legislature in 2016, the DOT examined the technical, commercial and financial feasibility of several types of ferries in Hawaii. It looked at an inter-island ferry, an intra-county ferry between Molokai and Maui, and intra-island ferries between West Oahu and Honolulu and between West and Central Maui.

The study reviewed the controversial Superferry, which served Oahu, Maui and Kauai between 2007 to 2009, as well as the recently shut down Molokai Princess, which ended operation between Molokai and Maui in 2016, after claiming financial hardship.…

Rawlins Gas Changes to Texaco

 

The new year has brought a new look for Rawlins Service station, which transitioned from Chevron to Texaco branding at the end of 2017. The gas remains the same, and the only thing that’s changed is the appearance, color and logo, said the Rawlins family, who have owned the business for four generations.

In 2016, Chevron across the state of Hawaii was bought out by Island Energy and rebranded as Texaco. However, Chevron Corporation owns Texaco, and the Chevron branding remains at mainland stations.

On Molokai, rebranding took place the Monday before Thanksgiving.

“It wasn’t as bad as we thought, we tried to avoid total shutdown [during the transition] because it’s hard on Molokai,” said Lori-Lei Rawlins-Crivello, company vice president.…

Implementing the Community Plan

The Molokai Community Plan Update process is in its final stretch, and a talk story session will be held tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 10, with councilmembers to discuss implementation of the plan. Kelly King, who chairs the Maui County Council’s Planning Committee, and Molokai’s Stacy Crivello will receive community input at the Mitchell Pauole Center from 5 to 9 p.m. in a continuing effort to wrap up the plan update.

This is the fourth in a series of informal gatherings to hear from community members. The Maui County Council has until the end of June to adopt a revised plan.

“Though it has been challenging reviewing the many details and important issues in the plan, it is also gratifying to hear the voices of Molokai residents,” said King.…

95 Years of Misaki’s Grocery

 

This year, Misaki’s Grocery and Dry Goods celebrates 95 years, having served great grandparents, grandparents, parents and children of Molokai residents in a family-operated business that itself spans four generations.

“I’m the third generation, it’s really weird when you think about it, when we look at old pictures,” said General Manager Kevin Misaki. “It’s almost unbelievable… We found an old bill… 300 pounds of poi from old poi shop… it was $15. Considering how long we’ve been doing this, it’s kinda crazy how the prices have changed over the years.”

Prices may have changed, but many aspects of running a small community business have remained the same.…

Friendly Farm Bread Meets a Molokai Knead

 

Here on Molokai, Friday afternoons are all about winding down and getting ready for the weekend.  But for Gene and Beverly Ferguson of Friendly Farm in Puko`o, Friday afternoons are when things really start to heat up.  They start pulling large strap pans of their coveted organic sourdough bread out of their convection oven and lay them out on the rack to cool, in preparation for Saturday morning’s farmers’ market in Kaunakakai.  Demand for their fresh-baked bread is great enough that many customers have put in their orders each week before the dough has even risen, and the Fergusons have become accustomed to their new moniker: “The bread people.”…

Review of Community Plan Today

County Councilmember Kelly T. King News Release

The Maui County Council’s Planning Committee will hold its Sept. 26 meeting on Molokai to continue review of the Molokai Community Plan and receive community input, Committee Chair Kelly King announced. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. at the Mitchell Pauole Community Center.

The Maui County Code requires community plans be updated every 10 years, as practicable, and include input from State and County agencies as well as the general public. The current Molokai Community Plan was adopted in 2001.

“Community input is of the utmost importance when it comes to developing the plan”, said King.…

Future Fest: A Peak into Possibility

Each year, Molokai High’s Future Fest opens up doors and inspires students to think out of the box when it comes to their futures. The all-day event, held last month, is open to community members, parents and students of Molokai High, Molokai Middle and Aka`ula schools and encourages exploration of a wide variety of post-high school options.

“Many of our participants are unsure about how to or unable to contact representatives so having a fair at Molokai High allows for all to have the same opportunity as their off-island counterparts,” said Lisa Takata, who co-coordinates the event with fellow teacher Kai Ward.…

Football Beats Seabury in Home Opener

 

The Molokai Farmers Football team started their regular season and their quest for a Maui Interscholastic League Championship three-peat with a 35-26 win over rival Seabury Hall last Saturday at the MHS field. It was the first game with a newly installed football scoreboard, and large crowd was on hand to support the Farmers. Molokai was led by senior quarterback Shraedon Naeole-Starkey who threw three touchdown passes and ran for another touchdown. Sophomore Kaimana Nakayama caught two touchdown passes and was also successful on all five extra points. Senior Braiden Asuncion and Junior Jayse Lalim-Rillon had touchdown runs also, while junior Chevy Augustiro led the defense in tackles and recovered two fumbles.…
