Sust`aina ble Molokai News Release

Sust `aina ble Molokai invites the Molokai community to join the Tentou Network for a day of transformative discussion on Molokai’s readiness for community ownership of renewable energy projects  on Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kulana `Oiwi Halau.

The Tentou network consists of nonprofit organizations from four continents and the Pacific Islands, working in close cooperation with our communities. The founding members of the network are the Samsø Energy Academy in Denmark; the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies in Japan; the Islands Institute in Maine, USA; the Coalition for Community Energy in Victoria, Australia; and Sust`aina ble Molokai in Hawaii, USA.…

Girls Paddling 8th in State

The Girls Canoe Paddling team battled on the water all day at Hilo Bay last Saturday in the state Canoe Paddling Championships. The Lady Farmers made it through preliminaries, then semi-finals, to make it to the finals race. The finished eighth in the state with a time of 4:39.88.

Head Coach Stefani Hubbard was proud of her crew for advancing to the state final.

“The girls put up a tough fight last Saturday kicking and scratching their way to make it to finals,” she said. “Though they fell short of our goal, the fact that they tried their best and left everything they had out on that water, they are still able to walk away feeling accomplished.”…

Girls Basketball Closes Season

The Lady Farmers fell short in the semi-finals of the Maui Interscholastic League Division II Girls Basketball tournament two weeks ago on Maui. They lost to the Lanai Pine Lasses (4-6) 49-36 and finished the season at 2-7. It was the fifth meeting of the season between the two teams. Junior Kaitlin DeRouin led Molokai with 20 points. Lanai ultimately fell to champion Seabury (8-1) Friday night 49-41. The Trojans are the lone representative to this year state tournament from the MIL DII league.

Head Coach Shane Mokiao said his girls gave it their all in the semifinal game.

“It was a great game but unfortunately we came out short,” he said.…

Practice Ocean Safety

This winter has brought “unprecedented” ocean fatalities on Maui, according to the Maui Fire Department. Though there have been no close calls reported on Molokai so far this season, officials are warning those entering the water to use caution, as winter swells bring strong current and high surf.

“In the last few weeks, Maui has experienced an unprecedented spike in ocean drowning incidents,” said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto. The month of January brought what he called an unfortunate “string of fatal drownings,” with the latest Feb. 3 drowning of a visitor from Alaska off Wailea marking the 10th ocean related death in Maui County in 2018, he said.…

Significance of Makahiki Medals

As arms were raised to declare champions, medals were awarded for their great accomplishments shown on the field at Ka Molokai Makahiki 2018. In the early years of Makahiki, various types of Hawaiian art — model koa canoes, paintings, `umeke, ipu wai, poi boards, feathered kahili  — were given as awards, followed by certificates, T-shirts, and,  more recently, medals created by artists from Molokai Heritage Company.  Last year’s medal was a pohaku ku`i `ai, a poi pounder, to remind us of our kuleana to keep Haloa (kalo) thriving by planting, harvesting, pounding and sharing that which sustained us for hundreds of years.…

Wrestling Sends 9 to States

 

After expectation-exceeding results for the Molokai Wrestling team at the Maui Interscholastic League Championships last weekend, nine wrestlers will compete at states Feb. 14-15. As a team, the girls finished third, and the boys took fourth place at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Head Coach Randy Manley was extremely proud of his wrestlers.

“Overall our guys and girls did well and some did better than anticipated,” he said. “Kamahina Kaiama-Kanuha (128 pounds) and Martika English (184) both beat opponents in the semi-final round that they had previously lost to. Caele Manley (154) and Diego DePonte (162) were our stand out first place winners for the boys and both secured nail biting one point victories over their opponents in the finals.…

2 Home Wins for Boys Basketball

 

The Boys Basketball team hosted the Hana Dragons last weekend at The Barn, where the Farmers won both games. They finished their regular season at 6-4 and will play Haleakala Waldorf Wednesday night on Lanai in the MIL DII Boys Basketball Tournament quarter-finals. Friday was senior night and the Farmers got the win of over the Dragons (2-6) 58-37. Molokai was led by senior Kaina Adolpho with 16 points.…

Marine Debris Field Dispersed  

 

A large marine debris field was spotted last week in the Ka`iwi Channel between Oahu and Molokai last week, causing concern that it could bring an influx of rubbish to Molokai’s western shores. The mass of nets, ropes, buoys, crates and drums was first reported by a fishermen on Jan. 27, who estimated its size at about two nautical miles long. State and federal agencies confirmed the debris field and its possible path was tracked by University of Hawaii’s Dr. Nikolai Maximenko and his team at the International Pacific Research Center at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.…

University of Hawaii professor Samuel Kaleikoa Ka`eo was issued a warrant for his arrest last week after he spoke only Hawaiian in court on Maui. Ka`eo appeared in connection to protesting construction of a Haleakala telescope, and when Judge Blaine Kobayashi asked Ka`eo to identify himself as present in the Wailuku District Court Wednesday,  Ka`eo did so in Hawaiian. The judge didn’t recognize his presence and asked three more times for Ka`eo to give his name, to which he responded each time in Hawaiian.

Kawa`aloa Beach Cleanup

The call went out on social media and 104 volunteers responded, removing 20 truckloads of marine debris at a Nature Conservancy (TNC) beach cleanup on Molokai.

Kawa`aloa Beach on the island’s northwest coast was the site of the cleanup, which took place on Jan. 13, the morning of the false North Korean missile alert.

The remote, crescent-shaped beach lies adjacent to the Conservancy’s Mo`omomi Preserve and is a hotspot for ocean debris that washes up on shore.  The debris includes plastic bottles and bags, rope, buoys, tires and cargo nets, among other items.

“We cleaned the beach for the turtles,” said Wailana Moses, TNC’s Molokai coordinator for the event.…
