Filemon M “David” Nanod

Filemon “David” Nanod, 97, died on Dec. 25, 2023 in Kaunakakai with his family. He was born in Makaweli, Kauai in 1926. He worked as an administrative and supply technician for the Hawaii National Guard for 37 years. Also known as “The Professor,” he was known for his love and service to the community for Little League baseball, from 1959-2016. He was predeceased by his wife, Carnation H. Nanod and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his sons David Sr., Glenn, and Lance, and daughters Valerie Gonzalez and Madeline Brown. He cherished his love for his 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.…

Fiber Internet Service Available for 95% of Molokai

Hawaiian Telcom expanded availability of its fast, reliable fiber internet service Fioptics to four of Molokai’s five zip codes, which equates to more than 95 percent of the island. Many Molokai residents may qualify for free service from the HI Connect Broadband Project.

Nearly 4,500 residents and businesses of Ho‘olehua, Kaunakakai, Kualapu‘u, and Maunaloa can access Hawaiian Telcom’s Fioptics internet service that delivers the fastest upload speed in the state of 500 megabits per second and 1 gigabit per second download, which is among the fastest speeds in Hawaii.

“We are grateful for Hawaiian Telcom’s investment to provide the high-speed connectivity that families and businesses need to thrive,” said Senator Lynn DeCoite who represents Molokai, Lanai, East and Upcountry Maui.…

Basketball Continues Dominance

Molokai Boys Basketball continued its dominant season with wins against the Lanai Pine Lads. The Farmers defeated Lanai 72-39 on Friday, and 60-40 on Saturday. Top performances came from Jericho Adolpho who dropped 20 points in Friday’s game, and Heath Lopez and Kaizen Umi-Torres-Napolean who put up 18 and 17 points respectively. These victories propelled the Molokai boys to a league best 8-0 record, with convincing wins against Kihei the previous weekend at the Barn.

 

Girls Basketball came into the weekend 6-0 before falling to the Lanai Pine Lasses on Friday. Leila Hooper-Phifer and Kaia Yamashita led the scoring for the Farmers in the 31-42 loss.…

Snake Found in Shipping Container

A live snake was found in a shipping container on Molokai the morning of Jan. 8, while it was being unloaded at a hardware store in Kaunakakai. Maui County Police on Molokai were called to the hardware store shortly after 8 a.m. Arriving officers shot and killed the snake with a pellet gun. The snake measured about 20-inches long and has been identified as a non-venomous gopher snake.

Staff from the Molokai Invasive Species Committee (MoMISC) held the dead snake at the hardware store until Maui Plant Quarantine Branch inspectors from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) arrived on the island just before noon.…

Tornado Warning Rattles Residents

As high winds and rain battered Molokai the evening of Jan. 8, forecasters for the National Weather Service (NWS) saw a troubling image on the radar. A powerful thunderstorm over Kepuhi Bay in west Molokai was exhibiting rotation and deemed capable of producing a tornado.

A tornado warning was issued at 7:45 p.m., with residents advised to take immediate cover. Although no tornado materialized, many residents were left with concerns over a lack of preparedness for such an event.

“We’re not used to doing tornado warnings, and that’s one of the really short fuse events where you have to take action right away,” explained John Bravender, a warning coordination meteorologist for NWS.…

Questions Remain for Hawaii Pacific Teleport Project

Nine satellite earth station antennas representing the Hawaii Pacific Teleport (HPT) project have been installed in Ho’olehua at the Goodfellow Brothers’ quarry. These white orbs are currently the subject of inquiry as they face a decision by the Molokai Planning Commission on Jan. 24.

The goal of the project is to expand Wi-Fi and cell phone coverage across Molokai and the surrounding ocean without the need for fiber cables, explained Haloa Dudoit, director of community outreach for the project.

“The antennas will allow residents to access reliable internet and Wi-Fi calling even in remote areas of Molokai and on the ocean,” said Dudoit.…

Molokai Firefighter Honored as Lahaina Hero

At a ceremony on Jan. 12, Molokai’s Tanner Mosher was honored by the Maui County Council for “his exceptional heroism during the August 2023 Lahaina wildfires.” A social media post from the Maui County Fire Dept. explained that “Firefighter Mosher was the driving force behind the rescue of nine MFD personnel who were entrapped during the fire.”

In a November interview with 60 Minutes, Mosher explained the nightmarish situation that faced Engines 1 and 6 the night of Aug. 8.

With their trucks trapped by downed power lines, the firefighters were subjected to hellish heat and smoke.

“We could see metal melting in front of our eyes.”…

Free Deer Meat Drive

In honor of King Kamehameha V, Lota Kapuaiwa Kalanimakua Aliʻiolani Kalanikupuapaʻikalaninui, who introduced the axis deer to Molokai and whose la hanau, or birthday, is Dec. 11, 1830, the Molokai Hunting Club (MHC) hosted another free venison drive for Molokai families.

MHC held the drive with the acknowledgment that axis deer continues to be a primary food source for the Molokai community. Over 200 households were reached during the free meat drive at Kiowea Park on Dec. 9.

“The most rewarding part of the free meat drive is our club members’ commitment to giving back to our ‘aina kupuna as well as helping to feed our island’s people.…

Dutton on the Path to Sainthood

Molokai is one step closer to having its third Catholic saint. Joseph Dutton, who served in Kalaupapa for 44 years, will be submitted to the Vatican for canonization consideration on Jan. 21. If approved, Dutton would join St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope as Catholic saints serving Hansen’s disease patients exiled in Kalaupapa.

A formal cause of canonization for Dutton was opened by the Diocese of Honolulu in May of 2022. Now, the nearly 2,000 pages of evidence gathered since then will be reviewed by the Church. Dutton needs proof of one miracle after his death to be named as “Blessed,” which is one step before sainthood.…

Cruise Line Reps Explore Molokai

The past 20-plus years have seen repeated protests, and even blockades, aimed at cruise lines wanting to visit Molokai. Now, a new cruise company contemplates testing the waters.

Representatives from American Cruise Lines journeyed to Molokai in early December at the behest of the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) and Sen. Lynn DeCoite, according to company President and CEO Charlie Robertson.

“We didn’t want to catch anyone off guard,” said Robertson. “This was very much an exploratory trip, and we were honored to be invited to come out to Molokai…It was really just a trip to ask questions and hear what Molokai and other communities in Hawaii would expect from a ship like ours.”…
