Hint, hint! Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13. Aunty Rae Young will conduct two workshops at Molokai Arts Center on Saturday, April 21 for young people who wish to make Mother’s Day earrings.

The first workshop will be for boys and girls ages 4 to 10 years old, although kids under 7 should be accompanied by an adult. It will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aunty Rae will have earring kits prepared so each keiki can make at least two sets of earrings for their mom, aunty, grandma or special person.

The second workshop will be for youths from 11 to 17 years old and will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.…

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight or get fit? Has that resolution come and gone? The dancercise class at Kilohana Elementary School may be the answer to finally keeping that promise. The 21st Century grant is now offering Dancercise at Kilohana Elementary on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m.

Like all 21st Century grant programs, the Dancercise class is free and open to anyone who would like to attend. Led by Lani Sawyer, the class is guaranteed to get your heart pumping. Dancercise is a combination of cardio, aerobics, dance and stretching that will leave you feeling energized and a little sweaty.…

Good news for Molokai Ranch may be good news for us all!

Many of you remember early last year when Molokai Ranch CEO Peter Nicholas held a series of informational meetings, where he explained that Governor Abercrombie’s threat of eminent domain — condemning private land for public use — had forced the Ranch to lease 11,000 acres to Pattern Energy for the construction of 90 giant wind turbines.

Two weeks ago, members of I Aloha Molokai (IAM) were invited to meet with former Castle & Cook Resorts Lanai land development director Mr. Clay Rumboa, who is now the new Ranch general manager.…

Molokai Arts Center is pleased to announce that a weekly open house for ukulele practice will be held on Sundays at 1 p.m. beginning Sunday April 8. Bring your uke and music to strum and sing old and new favorites.

This kanikapila style get together will be hosted by April Torres. Afterwards, you may wish to attend the weekly concert by Na Ohana Hoaloha on the deck at Coffees of Hawaii from 3 to

Bead-Making Workshop

Molokai Arts Center is pleased to announce a new class offering beginning in April 2012. Yoellah Yuhudah will teach the art of glass and clay bead making beginning on Tuesday April 17 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. for an eight-week session. This art is also called “lampworking.”

In this structured curriculum, students will learn to make perfectly round beads as well as glass techniques like flowers, raking stripes and dragging techniques to create shapes and feather colors. The emphasis will be on safety and proper use of tools including the mandrell, the torch and various materials.…

Proposed Marine Corps Training on Molokai

The U.S. Marine Corps is looking to expand their presence in Hawaii, and some of their proposed operations may take place on Molokai. New aircraft would be based at Kaneohe on Oahu, but the Marine Corp’s draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) calls for increased activity at the Kalaupapa airport, and use of the Ho`olehua Airport for training.

“With new squadrons [coming], it’s important to take a look at all potentially available facilities,” said Maj. Alan Crouch.

The proposed activity was met with unanimous objection from Molokai residents who attended a Marine Corps consultation meeting last week. A public scoping meeting for the project was held on Molokai back in 2010, with a public comment period open last fall.…

Ke Nani Kai Couple Awarded $3.8M in Suit

A west Molokai couple was recently awarded $3.87 million in damages when a Maui jury supported claims of harassment, threats and intimidation in a lawsuit against the Ke Nani Kai (KNK) homeowners association. In 2008, KNK residents Jim and Nancy Bevill, originally from California, sued the association, its board of directors, and several individuals, resulting in what has been called the largest monetary judgment of its kind in the country.

The 120-unit low-rise Ke Nani Kai resort on Molokai’s west end is intended to offer homeowners and vacationers a relaxing atmosphere with ample amenities. But for more than six years, “the Bevills found themselves targets… by an unlicensed contractor with a criminal record who was hired to do various tasks around the complex” as well as the resident manager, according to Terry Revere, who represented the Bevills.…

Kaunakakai Resident Completes 78-day Expedition

National Outdoor Leadership School News Release

Colby Smith of Kaunakakai recently completed a 78-day semester exploring the mountains, deserts and coastlines of the Baja California Peninsula with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS.)

From Sept. 21 to Dec. 7, 2011, Smith’s group of 14 students was introduced to a variety of adventure-based skills such as backpacking, sea kayaking, sailing and costal navigation.

The first section of the students’ semester began with 21 days of hiking in the Sierra San Pedro Mountains in northern Baja California— a volcanic mountain range extending over 1,000 miles down the spine of the peninsula. Students learned skills like terrain management and navigation.…

When was the last time you thought about bicycles? Was it watching Carlo riding down from Kaunakakai Wharf, or a vague memory of keiki days?

Many of us dismiss bicycles as childhood relics, but gasoline prices continue to soar in Hawaii. Rather than casting stink-eye at Molokai Chevron as we pass, perhaps it’s time to do something more constructive about a real economic crisis that only continues to worsen each month.

Recently, three college students drove an old London taxi 32,500 miles around the world in about 14 months. Buying gasoline in a number of countries highlighted the fact that the United States has the cheapest gas in the world.…
