Grand Re-Opening at Mitchell Pau`ole Center Tuesday

A blessing and grand re-opening of the Mitchell Pau`ole Center will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Kaunakakai, the County Department of Parks and Recreation announced. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the facility, located at 90 Ainoa Street.

The Mitchell Pau`ole Center was closed for improvements earlier this year, to bring the facility into compliance with the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible design, with changes including ADA parking and access to center, signage, restrooms, drinking fountain, door hardware, counter and accessible sidewalks and seating by bleachers.

The facility also underwent an expansion, building repairs and upgrades, including a new 2,826 sq.…

12 Days Adrift: The Story of Ron Ingraham

What began as a routine fishing trip to Lanai on Thanksgiving Day turned into a 12-day battle of survival at sea for Molokai’s Ron Ingraham. While his friends planned his funeral and authorities gave up the search, Ingraham lived on fish he caught, bailed all night while 20-foot waves crashed over his boat, and — having nearly given up all hope — “jerry-rigged” his water-sodden radio for one final signal for help that led to his rescue and a reunion with his estranged son.

Sixty-seven-year-old Ingraham wasn’t expecting a mishap at sea, but his lifestyle prepared him for it. He’s a fisherman who lives on his 25-foot sailboat, tied at a slip at Kaunakakai Harbor.…

Twelve businesses from Molokai have been selected to be among a 130 of Maui County’s top businesses at the 2014 Made in Maui County Festival. They are selling products certified as 51 percent or greater Made in Hawaii.

County Poised to Enforce GE Moratorium, Lawsuit Expected

A highly disputed voter initiative to ban the growing of genetically engineered crops passed in Maui County in last Tuesday’s General Election by a narrow margin of 50 percent to 48 percent, with just over 800 votes’ difference.

On Molokai, all of the island’s four precincts voted no by a ratio of nearly two to one, with 63 percent voting against the moratorium and 34 percent favoring it island-wide, according to stats from Hawaii’s elections website.

The initiative calls for a moratorium until a detailed environmental impact study of the harms associated with growing genetically engineered organisms has been completed and reviewed by the County Council.…

Molokai’s Own Named Statewide Educator of the Year

Every day, Molokai teachers nurture our students in the classroom, spend hours of their own time preparing lessons and assisting youth in afterschool programs, and carry the weight of ensuring the success of the future generation. One Molokai educator was recognized in particular this year for doing it all with grace, and going above and beyond her job description. Molokai Middle School (MMS) Hawaiian Language Immersion teacher `Iolani Kuoha received the Hawaii Association of Middle Schools Educator of the Year award last weekend – and she said she accepted the honor on behalf of her fellow teachers.

“I represent not only myself but all the teachers,” she said.…

Molokai Flood Zone Changes Presented on Monday

Important information on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) new digital flood insurance rate maps (DFIRMs) will be highlighted at public meetings being held on Molokai Monday, Sept. 8. The meeting is from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Dept. of Hawaiian Homelands, with a presentation at 3 p.m.

For Molokai, the revised DFIRMs reflect the integration of the 2008 statewide hurricane study, which affects properties on the south shore of Molokai, as well as the decertification of the Kaunakakai levee system.

Personnel from FEMA, the County of Maui and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will provide a short presentation and take questions on the new flood maps and insurance ramifications.…

Obituary: Mike Hiroshi Misaki

Mike Hiroshi Misaki, 89, passed away on July 29, 2014. He was born on Aug. 24, 1924 in Kaunakakai, Molokai. He was the owner of Misaki’s Inc.

In 1945, he served in the Army for two years in the Philippines. Upon returning, he decided to attend the National School for Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio and later resumed working at Misaki’s. He was an active member of Kalaiakamanu Hou Church and was the general chairman for the building committee that built the Sunday school and parsonage in 1965. He also served as a deacon.

He was married for 63 years and is survived by his wife, Diana, his children, Kevin, Gil and Lorri, and his grandchildren, Kristen, Kory and Kekumu.…

Businessman David Mikami has announced the closing of Molokai General Store (301 Ala Malama Street) in Kaunakakai. The last day of business will be Saturday, August 30.

The clearance sale began Wednesday, July 9 at 9 a.m. with the entire inventory at 20 percent off as well as select items at higher discounts. Everything must go!

Lei for Kalaupapa: lei-making event and Molokai donation locations

This year, June 30 marks the 45th anniversary of the end of the isolation of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients at the Makanalua peninsula (commonly known as Kalaupapa). In an effort to observe this anniversary and honor those who were subject to the policy, local non-profit Hui Malama Makanalua will be placing lei at every known burial site on the peninsula with their project named Lei Hali‘a O Kalaupapa (lei in remembrance of Kalaupapa), with the assistance of Kalaupapa National Park personnel.

Community members will be coming together to make and/or donate lei for the June 30th ceremony in Kalaupapa at these two locations:
