Maui Fire Dept. News Release

Two Molokai firefighters, Greg Jenkins and Jorgen Busby, have recently been promoted.

Greg Jenkins joined the Maui Fire Department on April 1, 1996 and was promoted to the rank of Captain this month on Sept. 16. After recruit class in 1996, Captain Jenkins was first assigned as a Firefighter to Molokai at the Ho`olehua Fire Station on Engine 9, B Watch. At various ranks throughout his career, Captain Jenkins has also worked at the Kaunakakai and Puko`o Fire Stations on Molokai, as well as on Maui, at the Napili Fire Station and in the Hazardous Materials/Training Bureau.…

“Pala ka hala, momona ka wana” is a saying connecting activities on the land with those in the ocean. In this case, when the hala fruits are ripe, the sea urchin or wana is fat and ready to eat. Now, hala will need to overcome a new nemesis that may not allow its fruits to ripen.

In 1995, the Hala Scale was discovered in a shipment of hala plants from the South Pacific to Hana, Maui. From there, it quickly spread to other islands. It was recently confirmed on Molokai in Puko`o and is believed to have been on the island for more than five years.…

Your motivation comes from understanding the big “why” you are doing what you do. When you understand the reason why, you will get much more energized.

Farmers Football Sweeps St. Anthony

The Farmers football team’s defense came together strong in the second half of the game to win last Saturday’s home conference game against the St. Anthony Trojans by a score of 20-6.

“Defensively we came out a little sluggish in the first half, but we brought it and played ball in the second half,” said Head Coach Mike Kahale.

Kahale said the team has a lot to work on, especially after injuries on the field. Junior Alden Abafo, a defensive back and running back, was hit hard and injured in the third quarter while running the ball and sat out the rest of the game.…

A Look Into Kalaupapa Life

When many people think of Kalaupapa, images of exile, suffering and disfigurement come to mind – stories from history books that tell a horrific tale from outside eyes. A photo exhibit that opened at the Molokai Museum and Cultural Center in Kalae last Saturday seeks to depict the people of Kalaupapa in a new light.

“So much of [Kalaupapa’s] history is based on other people’s accounts and often sensationalized and just not true,” said Valerie Monson, coordinator for Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa, the organization sponsoring the exhibit. “[The exhibit’s goal] is to capture history in their own words and the images they chose.…

Community Talks County Budget

Maui County mixed things up at this year’s community budget meetings with a new format that allowed residents, organizations and community leaders more focused opportunities to add input to the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2015-2016.

The new format rotated community members through tables of staff from each county department. County directors and staff members listened to concerns, addressed budget needs and answered questions about department-specific county-related issues. Attendees were given a form to write down their comments. All concerns were submitted to Budget Director for the Mayor’s Office Sandy Baz at the end of the meeting.

An International Affair

An International Affair

Kaunakakai Elementary hosted their first annual Cultural Night last Friday, complete with belly dancing and a balut eating contest, to showcase the cultural diversity within the community.  Parents and community members with many ethnic backgrounds from Fiji, Micronesia, Philippines, Russia, France, Mexico, Japan, Ireland, Turkey, and of course Hawaii, came together to expose students and their families to some of the cultures that make our community unique.

The goal of the evening was to educate and enrich the students by allowing them to “explore” other countries foods, traditions, and languages without even leaving the island, according to  coordinators of the event, Parent Community Network Center Coordinator Jennifer Whitted and Physical Education teacher U`i Kalani.…

Did you know that being happy is a choice?  The other day I came across someone in a meeting that didn’t seem to be “happy” with me.  On the other hand, this person didn’t seem to be “happy” with anyone else as well.  I chose to speak encouragements to all those around me, and the whole environment changed in the room.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I wonder which side of the bed he got up from this morning?” or “I think she is having a bad day,” etc. Before I get out of bed, I choose to think of things to be grateful for and then I say out loud, “This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it” from Psalms 118:24.   …

Molokai High School (MHS) 2013 graduate Michael Kikukawa is the first Molokai student to study at Harvard, a recognized institution in the world of higher education. Michael’s current academic standing as a Harvard sophomore inspires other MHS students to broaden their horizons in higher education.

On Friday, Oct. 3, 14 MHS students will travel to New York City and New Haven, Connecticut, to visit universities and colleges to consider post-high school educations on the East Coast. The students are members of the Molokai College Career Tour Club (MCCTC), a new MHS student club. The students will visit Columbia University, Barnard College, Fashion Institute of Technology, New York University, and Yale University in New Haven, CT.…

Makani Kai Air Expands Molokai Service

Makani Kai Air is now offering three more daily round trip flights between Honolulu and Molokai on Sundays and four more round trips on Fridays.

“We’re expanding the number of flights on those days in response to the number of passengers who were finding it difficult to get seats on those days,” said Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air. “Since we began our service to topside Molokai last June we have been extremely happy with the number of Molokai residents who now call us their airline.”

Located at 130 Iolana Place along Lagoon Drive, Makani Kai Air is on the other side of the airport, away from the terminals and congestion.…
