Maui County News Release

The County of Maui Department of Planning is seeking community review and comment on the initial steps to identify and map parcels on Molokai, Maui and Lanai that may be eligible for designation as Important Agricultural Lands under state law.

The law aims to preserve the highest quality agricultural lands in each county for current and future agricultural use and food security. The Planning Department is working with lead consultant Christine Feinholz of Pacific Cartography and Project outreach lead Anders Lyons of Kapalaea Consultants.

DHHL Molokai Cesspool Survey

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) is beginning an assessment of active and inactive cesspools throughout the state starting with homestead communities on Molokai.

Governor David Ige signed Act 125 into law in 2017, requiring the upgrade, conversion, or sewer connection of all cesspools in the State before January 1, 2050. It is estimated there are approximately 88,000 cesspools statewide.

The data collected from this survey is expected to provide accurate information for officials to determine appropriate funding mechanisms to assist families in complying with Act 125.

DHHL, through its contractor Hawaii Engineering Group, will conduct the Molokai field survey from March through April, weather permitting.…

Temporary Water Shut Off for Hoʻolehua

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), through its contractor Goodfellow Brothers, is conducting improvements to a main water line of the Hoʻolehua Water System on Molokai from Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18.

Water service is scheduled to be shut off from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, for customers on Lihi Pali Avenue west of the Keena Place intersection, Molokai High School, and the Hoʻolehua Fire Station.

Affected customers are asked to store water and adjust schedules accordingly.

The temporary water service interruption is a portion of DHHL’s $37 million capital improvement project aimed at improving Molokai’s 80-year-old Hoʻolehua Water System.…

Molokai Endangered Species Get Federal Funds

The Molokai Land Trust will be receiving $350,000 in congressionally directed spending, also known as earmarks, in this year’s appropriations bill, secured by U.S. Senator Brian Schatz. The new earmark funding will be used to support construction of predator-proof fencing to protect threatened and endangered species within the Mokio Preserve.

“This new earmark will protect dozens of threatened and endangered species on Molokai,” said Sen. Schatz, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “By supporting the Molokai Land Trust, we’re helping to care for native wildlife, strengthen local ecosystems, and preserve the island’s environment for years to come.”…

Molokai Program Among $6.6M for Local Projects

Congressman Kaialiʻi Kahele announced $6,686,000 in Community Funded Projects for Hawaii’s second congressional district. The funding, which was included in the federal government funding package that passed through the U.S. House of Representatives last week, is expected to be signed into law by the President this week.

Among nine projects, one is specific to Molokai. Maui Economic Opportunity will receive $100,000 for the Kaohi Program, which offers in- and out-of-school activities and will target 100 Molokai youth ages 11 to 18 years old to reduce alcohol, tobacco and drug use.

Soccer Mahalo

This is coach Greg with our high school and middle school soccer programs. I wanted to send a big shout out and thank you to MHS Athletic Director Lee DeRouin and Molokai High for all their hard work and time in getting our high school boys soccer team scrimmage against Seabury, getting us there, transportation and a place to stay! 

Thank you also to Jessica Kalanihuia and the 21st century program for allowing us to play under their program. 

Our boys are very thankful for the opportunity and will have memories for a lifetime. They also look forward to competing again next year!  Thank you again for all the support.…

Come and meet Kaunakakai’s cutest new attraction hosted by the locally based nonprofit Seed of Love (SoL). Join us for an open house on the farm in Kaunakakai this Sunday, March 20.

SoL’s mission is to work with the land and community to create a platform for learning, gardening and animal care including rescue and rehabilitation. SoL has partnered with the Yamashita family farm located along the Kalokoeli Fishpond in Kaunakakai. The farm is now host to SoL’s main attraction Maia and Angelo, a pair of miniature rescue donkeys that made their way to Molokai via a rescue program on Oahu.…

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Steven Borsella, Sr. of Hopewell Junction, NY on February 8, 2022. Alan was originally from Ho’olehua, Molokai, Hawaii. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964 upon graduation from Molokai High School. Alan served his country during two tours in Vietnam from 1966-1968 as a helicopter crew chief with the 155th Air Assault Helicopter Company. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran. Alan married the love of his life, Elaine, on April 26, 1969. They spent 52 years together and raised their children, Malia and Alan Jr., in New Rochelle, NY.…

Molokai Athletics Medal at States, Make History

It was a history-making weekend in the pool for Molokai swimmers at the state meet on Hawaii Island. Senior Kama Ward became the highest-achieving swimmer ever at Molokai High, earning a silver and bronze medal on the podium. He and Mauli Pupuhi represented the Farmers at the state level, marking the first state finals qualifications for a Molokai swimmer in more than 20 years, according to Coach Amanda Labriola. 

Going into the preliminaries on Friday, Ward was seeded first and came out first in the 50 yard freestyle. For his 100 yard free event, he was seeded fifth.…
