St. Damien Church Bell

Thursday, May 5th, 2022

Tempting to ring and fun to hear but just letting you all know, especially the kids that hang around Kaunakakai town, that the bell at St. Damien Church is not a toy to play with.  We got scolding too growing up, not only from Father, but someone from the Pe’elua ohana back then because that bell can be heard from anywhere in town and lower Ranch Camp. It is rung only when we are called to prayer, when the Eucharist is being consecrated at Mass, at funerals/All Souls Day in memory of those who passed, weddings and special occasions like Christmas and Easter when the Gloria is sung. …

Historic Ruling to Restore Kawela Stream Flow

By Catherine Cluett Pactol | Editor

In a landmark decision last week, the state Commission on Water Resource Management unanimously ruled to restore flow levels to Kawela Stream and four others in the area, after they had been almost fully diverted for more than a century. It’s a huge victory for community members who advocated through group Molokai No Ka Heke, which filed a formal request for stream restoration in 2019.

“After over a hundred years of Kawela waters being diverted across the island and wasted, we finally said enough is enough,” said Molokai No Ka Heke member Walter Ritte.  “The big ranching and ag operations are gone, and we couldn’t just sit and watch this precious water be thrown away.”…

The Boys Volleyball and Softball teams both had games last Tuesday and Wednesday, with two wins over Lanai for volleyball, while the Lady Farmers fell to Lanai in both softball games.

Volleyball played at home, with both games ending 3-0 – Tuesday’s sets were 25-11, 25-14, 25-21 and Wednesday’s scores were 25-13, 25-14, 25-13.

“Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was fun yet different,” Head Coach Hale Domingo said of the mid-week games. “Even if we won in three, the start of all games is a battle to get to 10 and Lanai made a few mistakes and we capitalized on it and took the momentum and we rode it out and got two big wins.”…
