Kupuna Portrait Project

A series of portraits painted of Molokai kupuna seeks to capture more than just a picture. Fifteen oil paintings of hulu kupuna, the island’s most esteemed elders, have been painted by artist Vonnie Brenno Cameron, in collaboration with Molokai based nonprofit Hui o Kuapa led by Maile and Hanohano Naehu. Each portrait, captured during talk story sessions over the past several years, tells a story and speaks to the mo’olelo held by the kupuna. 

Na Hulu Kupuna Project began four years ago, when Cameron, a kanaka maoli painter living in California, sought to reconnect with her great grandmother’s roots on Molokai.…

COVID Cases on the Rise

Molokai logged 40 new COVID-19 cases in the week between Wednesday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 11, bringing the island total to 1,017 since the pandemic began. However, that number may be significantly lower than the actual number of recent positive cases because of the increased accessibility to home tests, the results of which aren’t reported to the state, according to health officials. 

Dr. Libby Char, Hawaii Dept. of Health director, said with the rise in prevalence of home COVID tests, it’s likely that more people are taking tests at home than at testing facilities.…

Kalaupapa Memorial to Get $5M

For almost 20 years, families and members of nonprofit Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa have been working to make the Kalaupapa Memorial a reality, honoring the men, women and children who were taken from their families and exiled on the peninsula because they were diagnosed with Hansen’s disease. That dream came one step closer to completion when the Hawaii State Legislature approved $5 million in funding for design, planning and construction of the memorial on May 5.

Kawela Stream Flows Again

On Tuesday, May 11, full flow was restored to Kawela Stream, which has been diverted to West Molokai for over a century.  

The movement to restore Kawela began officially in 2019, when community group Molokai No Ka Heke filed a formal request for stream restoration with the State Water Commission.  This year, Molokai No Ka Heke and youth advocates from ‘Aina Momona conducted public outreach and appeared before the Water Commission three months in a row, in February, March, and finally in April, when the Commission agreed to the community’s request to pursue 100 percent restoration of Kawela Stream. …

Molokai Community Health Center has received a generous grant totaling $149,988 from the Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) Foundation for the expansion of its dental services to improve the oral health of Molokai families. Similarly, a skilled Riverside Orthodontist can help enhance oral health in the community by offering specialized orthodontic treatments tailored to individual needs. These services not only improve the alignment of teeth but also contribute to better overall dental health and confidence, although if you have an emergency is also good to have an emergency dental service at hand, so they can see you right away.…

Molokai High Graduation

The Class of 2022 will be honored through a closed graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 21 at 4 p.m.  Commencement will be a hybrid of “traditional” ceremony on the Molokai High Football Field with in-person commencement for graduates and only six guests/family. The commencement program will also be live streamed for family/community. The inclement weather alternative will be a drive-thru ceremony with graduates only on campus and guests/family will be in the car. Unfortunately, the proceedings will only be open to graduates and their families. Maunaloa School is looking for a school garden manager. The primary duty of the garden manager will be to oversee and manage a productive, organic fruit and vegetable garden while providing support to teachers as they utilize the space to accomplish learning objectives. The garden manager will work closely with administration and teachers, recruit volunteers to help maintain the school garden, create and foster community relationships, track the financial expenditures for the garden, and train school staff and volunteers in best practices for place-based, regenerative farming in school gardens.

Fiber Art Deadline

Hawaii Craftsmen News Release 

The deadline for Hawaii Craftsmen biennial juried art exhibition, Fiber Hawaii 2022, is looming. The last day to register is June 3. Molokai artists have the option of having their work juried by photograph or mailing the work for jurying in person.  Artists who wish to submit photos for jurying may submit two to three photos of their work by May 23. Accepted entries can then be mailed to the Downtown Art Center to arrive by June 3rd. Artists who prefer to have their work juried in person can mail their work to the DAC to arrive on or before June 3rd in order to be considered for jurying. …

Molokai Artists’ Historic Honolulu Show

Highlighted against white gallery walls, pedestals and glass cases, Molokai art is taking Oahu by storm in the largest ever group exhibition of Molokai artists in Honolulu, at the Downtown Art Center. The historic show, called No Stop Light: Molokai, opened last Friday and will remain on exhibit until Saturday, May 28. 

Twelve Molokai artists are represented, using mediums varying from bone to cloth, clay and paint, photography and coconut leaves, beads and wood. A diverse group of kama’aina and newcomers to the island, the artists utilize contemporary, traditional and cultural styles to highlight their work and represent Molokai in a stunning gallery display.…
