Celebrating Paniolo Heritage

Paniolo young and old tested their skills and strength in the arena last weekend in the Molokai Paniolo Heritage Rodeo King Kamehameha Celebration at the Molokai Ranch Jimmy Duvauchelle Arena in Maunaloa.  From roping to barrel racing, calf tying to keiki roping, the event brought the heat, red dust and the best of the island’s cowboys and cowgirls, showcasing a long and rich legacy of paniolo culture. 

Among the swirling red dust and cheers of the crowd, one detail stood out just as boldly as a clean loop or a tight barrel turn—the vibrant wild rags adorning the necks of every cowboy and cowgirl.…

Residents Get Renewable Energy Certification

Locally-run Ho’ahu Energy Cooperative Molokai held an inaugural Clean Energy Technician Training this spring, with 14 Molokai residents graduating with certification. The five-week course covered an introduction to photovoltaic energy, with a 40 hours of hands on build time during which students received on-site experience and skills building nanogrids, or small scale solar systems. 

“The state has a goal to transition to 100 percent renewables by 2045 and Molokai still has almost the entire way to go,” said Todd Yamashita, board president of Ho’ahu Energy Coop and instructor for the course. “What we’re doing here is helping ourselves and getting ready for this transition so that it will be our Molokai people who will benefit from these jobs.…

Racing on the Water Again

Last Saturday kicked off the summer’s canoe paddling season with the first race at Kaunakakai Wharf since the COVID pandemic. Paddlers of all ages from Molokai’s canoe clubs vied for the first across the finish line in ¼ mile and ½ mile races, some crews in it just for fun and some competing for a qualifying time to enter this year’s state canoe race in August. Races will be held at the wharf every other Saturday in June and July. …

PALS Program Gives Free Keiki Meals

The County of Maui’s Summer PALS program is providing free meals at sites on Maui and Molokai to make sure that no children in the County of Maui go hungry while school is closed for summer break.
The Summer Food Service Program is a federal program made available to eligible areas to ensure that children receive nutritious meals. All youth 18 years old or younger are eligible to receive a free meal any weekday.

Many children in the County of Maui receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but many of these children do not get enough to eat when school is out.…

Call for Water Conservation

With parts of Maui County under severe to extreme drought conditions, the Department of Water Supply is asking everyone to conserve water as much as possible during these hot, dry summer months. When you have hot water heater low pressure issues, call a plumber to have your system inspected.

The department is not immediately declaring a water shortage, although that step might be necessary in coming weeks without relief from current very dry conditions. The National Weather Service reports extreme drought on Maui in the lower leeward slopes of Haleakala between Maalaea and Wailea, and severe drought in Maui’s Central Valley and Upcountry.…

Grace H. Yamamoto

Grace H. Yamamoto, 85, of Kaunakakai, Molokai passed away on May 4 at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.  Born in Lahaina, she was a homemaker.  She is survived by daughters Clarice Paro of Hilo and Francine Yamamoto of Kihei; sons Eric (Emmalani Kela) Yamamoto of Hilo, Leslie (Poniala) Yamamoto of Las Vegas and Jacob Yamamoto, Jr. of Kihei; sisters Margaret Kishi of Maui and Gladys Watanabe of Oahu; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.  

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. and services at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 at Kaunakakai Baptist Church.  Casual or aloha attire.  No flowers. …

American Councils for International Education (AC) is seeking two families on Molokai who would be willing to open their home to Talay from Jordan, age 15, and Mark from Hungary, age 17, for the new academic year.  Host families have the opportunity to teach these students about American culture and values firsthand.  When these students return to their home they will be ambassadors for Hawaii and America values and culture.  Many foreign exchange students have become leaders in their home communities by starting new volunteer organizations and developing community initiatives.  There is no better place on earth than Molokai to teach being connected values!…

Celebrating King Kamehameha

A weekend-long celebration of King Kamehameha last Friday and Saturday included an elegant gala dinner, a festive and colorful parade and fun-filled ho’olaulea. 

During the parade, this year’s Royal Court heralded and honored the King on a flower-laden float, while horseback pa’u units draped in colorful lei represented each island. Along with the court and pa’u units, the parade included organizations like the Molokai Hunting Club, Molokai first responders, Bayer Molokai, Aunty Jan’s House of Blessings, and the U10 AYSO girls soccer team that plans to be the first Molokai team to play in an AYSO tournament on Oahu.…
