Retired and longtime Molokai dentist Dana Takashima is the Hui O Kukui Golf Club’s October Ace winner. The monthly ace was held at iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course on Saturday Oct. 3.
Dana shot 39-37 for a gross total of 76 and with his 13 handicap he had a net score of 63 to claim the win. Congratulations Dana!…
Gladys “Cookie” Brown was born in Lahaina, Maui on June 4, 1926, the youngest of 10 siblings. She graduated from Lahainaluna High School in 1944 and was active in many leadership roles while she was there. One close friend and classmate described her as a “really smart girl.” She spent a year teaching in Missoula, Montana, followed closely by some time teaching in Waimanalo on Oahu.
She moved to Molokai and continued her teaching career on the East end of the island. Throughout the years, she had stints at different schools on the island, including the no longer existent Holomua School.…
DHHL News Release
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) is asking all Hoʻolehua Water System customers to reduce their water consumption for necessary purposes only through the month of October.
Large quantities of water use, along with drought conditions, have impacted the Hoʻolehua Water System storage tanks. The tanks are currently below expected levels and the pumps are unable to keep up with the demand.
DHHL advises all customers to reduce their water usage by 25 to 50 percent using the following tips:
· Repair faucet leaks and water line leaks
· Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth
· Shorten shower time
· Install aerators and low-flow showerheads
· Reduce or eliminate watering of lawns or filling up “kiddie” pools
Customer efforts in reducing water usage will allow the tanks to replenish and avert the need for more restrictive measures.…
County of Maui News Release
Mayor Michael Victorino announced that food distribution events will be held on each Friday in the month of October for Molokai residents in need.
The last food distribution took place 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 at the Mitchell Pauole Community Center in Kaunakakai.
Volunteers passed out 150 boxes of fruits and vegetables on a first-come, first-served basis. Recipients are required to wear face masks.
To maximize social distancing, food distribution will be done in a grab-and-go drive-through (no walk up). Motorists will have the option of getting boxes placed in their vehicle’s trunk or rear cargo area.…

‘Ohana by Hawaiian, one of the two passenger air carriers serving Molokai, announced last Friday it will temporarily stop service beginning Nov. 1 due to low travel demand from COVID-19. Flights between Honolulu, Molokai and Lanai will be affected.
‘Ohana’s 48-seat ATR-42 turboprop aircraft represent the only planes currently serving Molokai that accommodate passengers boarding in a wheelchair and those weighing more than 350 pounds. Along with concerns that its suspension of service will leave those who are wheelchair bound without travel options, ‘Ohana’s termination would also leave its Molokai employees, as well as local TSA agents, jobless.…

Molokai logged no new COVID-19 cases last week, as statewide, the total cases as of last Friday reached 13,300 and COVID-19-related deaths in Hawaii totaled 166 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Starting this week on Oct. 15, the state will allow a pre-testing program for residents and visitors entering Hawaii that will allow travelers to bypass the 14-day quarantine if they show a negative COVID test within 72 hours of travel. A brush fire and water rescue took place simultaneously on Molokai last week Monday, Oct. 5.
An overheated vehicle is believed to have started the Mo’omomi brush fire that burned 10 acres. Firefighters got the call at 2 p.m. and had the fire contained by about 3 p.m. using two engines and a tanker. It was fully extinguished around 5 p.m. Though no one was injured and no buildings damaged, the Fire Dept. reported the blaze came within 50 feet of a residence.
At 2:15 p.m. the same day, the Fire Dept. also got called for an ocean rescue for two people offshore near Kaunakakai Harbor.…

The County of Maui and Maui Economic Opportunity launched today a $2.5 million program to assist small local farmers in Maui County. The Agriculture Micro Grants Program provides grant funding of up to $25,000 to farmers on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
Applications are available online at meoinc.org.
“This program will benefit local consumers by improving the availability of local produce, livestock and poultry in Maui County, while also increasing farm capacity, productivity, name recognition and income for farmers,” Mayor Michael Victorino said.

In this afterschool program, the ʻopio will be able to connect to themselves, their ohana, and their community through the use of photography. Led by Kumu Kanoelani Davis, the photo strategy aligned with Hawaiian cultural values has sparked a fun and artistic way for the kids to express themselves. Hawaiian Electric recently presented a donation of two 2012 Nissan Leaf electric vehicles (EV) to the University of Hawaii Maui College’s (UHMC) Native Hawaiian Career and Technical Educational Program to provide mechanics hands-on experience in maintaining and repairing EVs.
The new program addresses a need that came up during discussions Hawaiian Electric conducted with the Molokai community.
“There was interest in EVs, but residents pointed out if they invested in the vehicles there were no on-island EV technicians who could provide servicing and repairs,” said Gregg Kresge, Hawaiian Electric’s electrification of transportation project delivery manager. “In further discussions with the vehicle mechanics on Molokai, all were enthusiastic about participating in EV training if it was available.…
