Flora Cabaccang Agulan

Flora Cabaccang Agulan was born in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines in 1937. She worked hard to support her family at a young age buying and selling until she married the late Hilario “Ariong” Agulan arriving on Molokai, Hawaii in 1971. Her journey began working in the pineapple industry for Del Monte (CPC) and a weekend job doing yard maintenance for “Pepe” Cooke and the McCarthy family, tagging along the kids to teach the values of hard work. After her husband’s passing in 1983, she worked for various fruit and plant nurseries and continued her buy and sell endeavors.

In 1988, she established the Kualapu’u Launderette and was better known as “Nana.”…

Mahalo Humane Society

Wednesday, November 18th, 2020

I’ve brought multiple animals into the Molokai Humane Society in the last couple years, mostly all animals I’ve come across that were dumped. From cats, dogs, and even a box of puppies, animals needing to be spayed/neutered, animals that were sick and in pain, animals that were malnourished and covered in fleas… and each time we were treated with the upmost respect and support. My constant questions were always answered with kindness. And I always left feeling full of gratitude that there was a place I can go with staff that I could trust that would help me when I needed it.…

Every Kolea Counts

Wednesday, November 18th, 2020

Hawaii Audubon Society News Release

The Hawaii Audubon Society is conducting the first-ever statewide count of Kolea, or Pacific Golden-Plovers, inviting community members to help count. The last Oahu-only count was in 1968, estimating 15,173 Kolea. In 1992, researchers counted 1,902 Kolea on Oahu’s 28 (38 today) golf courses. Because no counts have been conducted since then, and never any statewide counts, no one knows if the Hawaii population is increasing, decreasing or stable.

Besides estimating Hawaii’s Kolea population, the Hawaii Audubon Society’s project aims to increase resident and visitor awareness and appreciation of these birds that nest in Alaska, and spend winters in Hawaii.…

Blessed to Have Humane Society

Wednesday, November 11th, 2020

We’re blessed to have such a dedicated and compassionate team at the Molokai Humane Society helping control this island’s animal population. In spite of limited enforcement and negligible help from the county, they’ve remained steadfast in their commitment to providing affordable spay/neuter for the people of Molokai at a fraction of what it costs nearly anywhere else. MoHS is a nonprofit. Their responsibility is spay/neuter, and beyond that, the veterinary services they provide are a privilege for this island and there have been many years where there’s been no veterinarian at all.

You might have grown accustomed to 24 hour emergency veterinary services wherever you lived previously.…

Veterans Day

Wednesday, November 11th, 2020

Mahalo to our veterans for all their services and sacrifices. To the men and women who were recruited or drafted to sign on that dotted line and trained to defend our country, our home, from enemies, foreign and domestic, while being away from their families, we honor and thank you with this poem:

Veterans Day
By Cheryl Dyson

On Veterans Day we honor all,
Who answered to a service call,
Soldiers young, and soldiers old,
Fought for freedom, brave and bold,
Some have lived, while others died,
And all of them deserve our pride,
We’re proud of all the soldiers who,
Kept thinking of red, white and blue,
They fought for us and all our rights,
They fought through many days and nights,
And though we may not know each name,
We thank ALL veterans just the same.…
