Ho’ahu Energy Cooperative Molokai, a local group formed to support community-owned energy projects, invites you to join us for our next virtual workshop on Saturday, July 24, 9 to 11 a.m.

This workshop will be Tech Review Day, Part 3: Battery Storage Safety! In May and June, we learned about different solar panel and battery storage technologies. This week we will hear case studies for battery safety and discuss how we can design our battery system to improve safety for both people and the environment.

The workshop continues the coop’s work to design solar and battery storage projects for Maui Electric’s upcoming Community Based Renewable Energy (CBRE) Request for Proposals (RFP).…

Free Meals for All Public School Students

All students at Molokai public schools are among Hawaii’s 257 public schools that will receive free breakfast and lunch meals for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year, thanks to a nationwide waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The waiver aims to minimize the possible spread of COVID-19 at schools across the country by eliminating meal payment transactions in school cafeterias, settings where students and cashiers may not be able to maintain proper social distancing. Federal funds will reimburse state education departments for meal costs.

Bovine TB Found on Molokai

Twenty-five years after a bovine tuberculosis (bTB) outbreak on Molokai caused the culling of all the island’s cattle, a cow infected with the disease was reported by the Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture last Friday. The infected cow was originally from a beef cattle herd in Ho`olehua and was temporarily pastured in Mapulehu on the east end because of the ongoing drought, the HDOA reported.

Bovine tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, is a contagious and infectious disease of animals, usually carried by cows, that can also infect humans. There have been sporadic outbreaks on Molokai in cattle herds since the 1940s, especially on the east end, but this is the first detected case in Hawaii since a Molokai outbreak in 1997.…

The Molokai Clean Energy Hui (MCEH) will begin an island-wide, community-led renewable energy planning process this year. County Gym to Reopen

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation is preparing to reopen gymnasium facilities that have been closed for recreational use since March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, including Molokai’s gym in Kaunakakai.

Mokulele Pet Policy

The “What’s Happening Molokai” Facebook page has multiple examples from residents attempting travel with a pet on Mokulele Airlines. The latest policy requires 48 hours notice for a pet to travel or pay a fee of $120.00. The pet must also be in an enclosed carrier to sit on your lap.

This policy has not been consistently addressed by Mokulele Airlines staff so many customers are not told of the policy when making a reservation. This leaves a pet owner scrambling to comply when they arrive at the airport for their flight.

Will The Molokai Dispatch please reach out to Mokulele Airlines to provide clear policy information for pet travel?…

Molokai Wins at Makawao Rodeo

Molokai paniolo came home well-decorated from the 4th of July Makawao Stampede rodeo on Maui. Sale Sproat was named the weekend’s coveted All Around Cowboy after a series of wins in various events, Kahiwa Augustiro placed third in bull riding and third in steer wrestling, while his brother Chevy Augustiro earned second place in steer wrestling, Sproat’s daughter, Bailey Sproat, won the second heat of steer undecorating, and Lane Kamakana competed as well.

After spending the first few days of the rodeo in roping events, Sunday brought five events for Sale Sproat. He won his first event of the day, Po’o Wai U, and gained a personal best of 17.26 seconds, before moving on to Ranch Bronc Riding, winning the event with an eight-second ride.…

Cancer Fund Gets $9K Grant

Molokai Cancer Fund News Release

Molokai Cancer Fund received a grant for $9,000, which will help Molokai residents diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing treatment with travel to Honolulu or Maui. Travel costs can be so expensive for those who have limited or no travel benefit from their health insurances (underinsured or uninsured).

This is the first grant funding received from Bayer and we will keep helping our Molokai Cancer patients and their caregivers through people’s donations and through our annual Walk for Ohana Fundraising event which was halted due to the pandemic. On behalf of Molokai Cancer Fund, we would like to express our best gratitude to Bayer Molokai, especially to Dawn Bicoy who always keeps us informed and to Stacie Sasagawa from Oahu who also sends reminders.…
