Haunted Homestead a ‘Labor of Love’

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

For the second year, the Adolpho ‘ohana went all out for Halloween, providing a free, COVID-safe event for families to celebrate the season at their homestead. The four-day Haunted Homestead last Wednesday through Saturday nights featured a light show, haunted maze, jumping castle, photo booth, vendors, snacks and other activities. More than 1500 community members attended in one-hour time slots that ensured COVID safety guidelines were met.

“It’s really a labor of love,” said Kui Adolpho. “It takes us months to set up and plan, but it’s a family activity to do together. Having an objective creates this closer-knit unit that we already have and inspires our kids to see that giving back to our community is important but can still be fun.”…

Businesses Adapt to Virtual Made in Maui County Fest

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

Kala’e Tangonan of Kupu A’e, a Molokai business that creates kupuna-inspired wearable art, said she hasn’t missed a year in the eight years the Made in Maui County Festival has been running, and she doesn’t plan to stop now. Even though the popular product show will be held virtually on Nov. 5-6 for a second year because of COVID, which posed technological challenges for her, Tangonan is determined to continue the business’ presence at the event.

“It’s a commitment thing — integrity as a small business,” she said. “People believe in me so I’m going to still go [to the festival]… All the small businesses in the county really advocated to have this fair, everyone hustled for us.”…

Passing The Baton in Kalaupapa

Community Contributed

By Father Pat Killilea, St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa

I have lost a step or two since my high school running days 60 years ago, but I still enjoy watching track and field on television. I particularly like to watch the relay races where the first runner takes a stick (baton), takes off like a bat out of hell, passes the baton to a team mate, who in turn passes it on to another team mate, who passes it on to a fourth, who sprints to an exciting finish, baton in hand. This is no easy feat as disaster can happen in an exchange and the baton is dropped.…

Beautiful Molokai

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021

Molokai is so beautiful, natural beauty of nature’s art. Lovely cliffs, waterfalls, beauty of ridges, valleys, white sandy beaches, beautiful colors of the reef. We all enjoy the beauty of our Molokai beach, ocean land for survival of our life in this beautiful Earth we call home. Sometimes it’s our mission, responsibility, respect to take good care of our home, Earth. Beautiful sunrise of Haleakala from Molokai. Many beautiful colorful rainbows, lovely golden sunset. Aloha, beautiful day, have a good rest at night. Wake up with a beautiful new day of our life on our beautiful Molokai. Life is beautiful. Every day is important and special. …

Dwindling Services

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021

We, the people of Molokai, used to have a ferry that traveled to/from Maui twice daily, and we used to have services from three different airlines.  However, as of February 2021, off-island travel for family visits, doctors’ appointments, medical treatments, or to conduct business or shopping (not only for tourists) means to fly Mokulele Airlines/Southern Airways, only.  Except for an occasional mishap we basically were satisfied with Mokulele’s service.

However, our 20-month-old grandson and his parents were here visiting this past weekend from Oahu (a quick two-day visit and vacay).  Their return flight was delayed 36 hours. The airport was full of passengers, and I’m sure each have their own story to tell. …
