Art-Filled New Year
MAC News Release
These past 20 months have been quite subdued at the Molokai Arts Center, but we’re looking forward to an exciting, art-filled 2022!
Our Artist in Residence program will be back on track with our first artist arriving in January. The MAC AIR program offers artists the perfect backdrop to create, explore, and experience a unique culture. 2022 will bring an established movie/TV scriptwriter, an Oceanic wood sculptor, a world-renown conductor/concert pianist, and a Kanaka Maoli musician.
The Performing Arts component will grow in 2022, beginning with ukulele classes and theatre workshops in addition to presentations by our AIR musicians.
We continue to support and sponsor Molokai Instrumental Music Education (MIME) led by Bob Underwood and Malama Molokai Wellness helmed by Genevieve Correa and Kananikala Bishaw-Juario. These programs provide services that support our mission and we are humbled by their contribution to the fabric of our community life.
The Hawaiian Arts (HA) Program will feature an apprenticeship project designed to support living kumu/artists who reside on Molokai, revitalize the traditional arts on Molokai, and educate and increase awareness of Native Hawaiian traditional culture and arts. Part one of this project will include classes and presentations in papa kuʻi ai (wood carving), kapa, humu papa hulu (feather work), lauhala weaving, and lei haku.
We hope to see Art Bar return with loosened COVID restrictions. Stained Glass classes are expected to return this month. Our regular classes will continue — Keiki Arts, Ceramics, Painting, and school/company sponsored partnerships. If you are interested in teaching a craft, visit our website for a Workshop Application.
The first 11 years of Molokai’s only nonprofit arts education organization has grown since it opened its doors in the little shop on the Coffees of Hawaii property. Your generosity helped keep us afloat while we were forced to scale back on our programming.
We appreciate your continued monetary support and hope to continue providing art classes, youth programs and events to showcase Molokai artists. We believe that everyone in the Molokai community, from the professional artist to the novice, deserves the opportunity to develop their creative gifts. We value teaching and learning, serving our community, sharing and giving, and creating. We value you, the established and blossoming artist of Molokai.
