A Weekend on the Water

Competitors in the Molokai Holokai race last Sunday paddled along the island’s south shore in an annual race that included both local and off-island athletes. The Molokai Holokai featured a longer course and a short course, encompassing all ages and abilities, with competitors racing on a variety of watercraft.

“This race had over 30 Molokai kids paddling solo or with parents and others in canoes, standup paddle boards and kayaks,” said Race Director Clare Mawae. “Assisting paddlers from Molokai, Maui, U.S. Virgin Islands, Australia, New Zealand and U.S. mainland chaperoned the kids, the future generation to a welcoming and cheering crowd at Molokai Community Health Center.”

The previous day, many also raced in the Maui Jim Maui 2 Molokai Challenge across the channel. Both races were organized by Molokai nonprofit Youth in Motion, that encourages youth people to get out on the water.
