The Molokai High School Girls Paddling crew traveled to Keehi Lagoon on O‘ahu last Saturday for the HHSAA State Canoe Racing Championships. The Lady Farmers finished 8th in the state (4:42.82) after finishing 4th in Heat 2 of the prelims (4:53.71) and 2nd in semifinal heat 1 (4:42.30).
Head Coach Stefanie Hubbard was happy with her young team and proud of their effort, “It was a fun but tough day for the girls. They paddled hard and fought their way into finals. I’m so very proud of them for pushing their limits and making it that far this year. With such a novice crew, I can’t wait to see what we can do next year.”
The Molokai Girls Paddling Crew at states this year was Laule‘a Kekahuna, Anue Pupuhi, Tatiana Mollena Na-O, Jazmine Stone, Noelani Yagin and Ashawna Davis.…

Hawaiian Electric News Release
Hawaiian Electric is in exploratory discussions with Pūlama Lāna`i about the possible sale of the Lāna`i utility.
Hawaiian Electric was approached by Pūlama Lāna`i about acquiring the assets of the utility after Hawaiian Electric issued a request for proposals (RFP) for renewable energy projects on Lāna`i. The exploratory talks are in the preliminary stages.
Representatives of the privately held company said it was already working to develop a plan that would increase the use of renewable energy and lower electricity bills for the island’s 3,000 residents. It approached the utility as part of its long-term sustainability plans for the island, which is almost entirely owned by entrepreneur Larry Ellison and managed by Pūlama Lāna`i.…

Aloha Molokai veterans! As a state of Hawai‘i veterans advocate, I will periodically write about current VA news and information that will benefit Molokai veterans.
Starting Jan. 1, 2020, veterans with service-connected disabilities 0-90 percent, Purple Heart recipients and POWs now have access to Commissary, Military Service Exchanges and physical access to military installations. Veterans must have the Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) to present at facilities and bases. The VHIC is the same card veterans use to check in at VA medical clinics for appointments. The VHIC must show one of the three eligibility requirements or veterans will not be allowed access.…

The Molokai Arts Center’s next Art Bar will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Join us for an evening of painting while enjoying the company of other creatives like yourself. Enjoy a beautiful sunset, a no-host bar and appetizers, and live music at Hiro’s ‘Ohana Grill, located at Hotel Molokai.
January’s Art Bar instructor will be Lynn Schuette who also happens to be MAC’s next Artist in Residence. Schuette will guide everyone in creating a landscape painting using representational elements, abstraction, unexpected color, and shifting perspective.
All materials are provided compliments of the Molokai Arts Center and each participant will get to take their piece of art home with them.…

The Molokai HS Boys Basketball team traveled to Lana‘i City last weekend to start the MIL DII regular season. The Farmers lost to the Pine Lads on Friday 76-40.
Junior Nicolas Rapanot led Molokai with 16 points and Andre Adams led the Pine Lads with 22 points. On Saturday, Lana‘i improved their record to 2-0 with 66-32 win over the Farmers (0-2). Molokai was led by senior Vaai Seumalo with 11 points. Andre Adams had 14 points for the Pine Lads.
This weekend at The Barn, there will a doubleheader MIL DII Basketball as the Hana Dragons come to town with both their boys’ and girls’ teams.…
