‘Mythical’ Music

A Tibetan flutist and Grammy Award-nominated pianist have come together to provide Molokai with an evening of unique music, chanting and prayer – Awakening Kindness for Mother Earth – on May 12.

Peter Kater, six-time Grammy Award-nominated pianist and composer, and Nawang Khechog, flutist, author and former student of the Dalai Lama, have been friends and music collaborators for almost 20 years.

“All our concerts are improvisational around various structures, key changes, chord changes and spiritual concepts,” Kater said via email.

Kater and Khechog’s concert will be held at Mahana Gardens, 10 miles west of town, and hosted by Kalele Bookstore and Divine Expressions. Kater said he met Kalele’s owner, Teri Waros, in California while he was on tour. Kater moved to Maui a few years ago, where Waros found him again and asked him to play on Molokai.

“We’re so much looking forward to coming to experiencing the land and people of Molokai,” Kater said. “It’s almost mythical in its beauty and energy.”

My dear friend of 18 years, Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog, arrived on Maui on Sunday afternoon to perform five “Awakening Kindness” concerts with me around Hawaii from May 11th – 15th. While only yesterday we casually walked the beach, today, in a jolting and unexpected turn of events, Nawang underwent five hours of surgery to remove a large blood clot from his brain. This was probably a complication from a serious auto accident he was in a few years back in India. Currently he is in intensive care and the outlook is cautiously optimistic. I humbly ask that you send him your prayers and healing energy. As an expression of Awakening Kindness, Native American flutist, R. Carlos Nakai, is flying to Maui to perform the Awakening Kindness tour with me in honor of Nawang. R. Carlos and I started recording and touring together some 22 years go and I introduced Nawang and R. Carlos a few years later. Ironically, this will be the first time in over 10 years that R. Carlos and I have performed together in concert. Please join R. Carlos in myself with your presence, prayers and/or support of our dear brother, Nawang Khechog. – Peter Kater

Of course, we are continuing to pray for Nawang’s healing from emergency surgery on Monday. Molokai is thrilled to welcome R Carlos Nakai with Peter Kater to continue the intention of Awakening Kindness for Kahonua Nei a me Molokai. Molokai Pule O’o will provide for a deeply moving and inspirational evening at Mahana Gardens this Thursday; doors open at 5:30pm, come get your tickets today at Kalele Bookstore or call 808 553 5112 to charge by phone.
